Objectives

The main objective of the Baltic Sea Youth Media Camp (OJMC) was to invite young people from the countries around the Baltic Sea to media-centered activities and intercultural exchange. In 2020, the Regional Youth Council (LJRSH) planned the 16th Baltic Youth Media Camp. Due to the Covid pandemic we had to postpone the exchange. In 2020 we organized a digital version of the OJMC and in 2021, we were able to implement the exchange. Taking into account the importance of media literacy, we wanted participants to experience alternative and creative uses of media and learn new media skills. The camp contributed to a strengthening of the media literacy of the participants, a skill required for their everyday life as well as future careers. In doing so, we contributed to the Youth Goal #7 "quality employment for all" and #8 "quality learning". Furthermore, we wanted to tackle the Youth Goal #1 "connecting EU" and #4 "information and constructive dialogue" with youth and show the European dimension of media, e.g. giving participants the opportunity to discuss and understand the meaning of media within Europe. We wanted to show the connection between media and politics and how media and politics influence each other. In addition, our goal was to create a sense of European awareness and to show the advantages Europe offers and the opportunities in Europe, especially for young people. Furthermore, we wanted to increase the interest in European cooperation and mobility within Europe. In addition, the camp created awareness for and an understanding of other cultures and countries. By doing so, we aimed to contribute to part 2 of the European Youth Strategy, "connect", and to raise European awareness. We aimed for an open discussion about extremism and radicalism, e.g. populist activities in media like Fake news, filter bubbles and Hate speech. This was supposed to support and encourage cultural diversity and the importance of intercultural dialogue. It was also supposed to raise awareness about the importance of common European values such as freedom, tolerance and human rights. By bringing together young people from different backgrounds, e.g. some were active in youth organizations and some were not, we wanted to inform about the possibilities in youth organizations and European programmes and motivate them to become more active. Therefore, another objective was to raise the knowledge about the possibilities of youth organizations and European programmes and contribute to youth goal #11. By cooperating with different organizations from different countries, we hoped to support cultural diversity and tolerance, which eventually should promote anti-racist thinking. The strengthening of anti-radical thinking by different phases during the program where topics like discrimination and prejudices were addressed which should have helped to prevent radicalization. By communicating in German and English, the objective was to improve the participants’ foreign language skills. The Baltic Youth Media Camp was also supposed to strengthen the international capacity of the participating organizations. The exchange aimed to promote good networking of different youth organizations, NGOs and other institutions working with youth in the Baltic region and strengthen youth work in the Baltic region generally.
