Our aim is to increase media literacy among young people and develop their competencies to recognize propaganda, media bias, incorrect reports and disinformation. Through our on-going activities we realized that young people face every day huge number of media messages but they are with lack of abilities to analyse them, to make difference between ‘real news’ and ‘fake news’. And they are not equipped with the competencies of creating media messages by themselves. We believe that it is important to provide them an opportunity to become media literate and to think critically about media content, role of media and social media in the society. Moreover, media literacy is important in sustaining democracy by knowing which information sources to trust and which media are trustworthy. It is essential element of active participation and involving young people in decision making processes. Objectives of the project ‘Media Tools for Active Youth: - to increase capacities of young people, including young people with fewer opportunities, to analyse digital/social media and to send own messages; - to increase critical thinking and active involvement of young people in discussion on the importance of media literacy; - to raise awareness of young people about the importance of media literacy with special focus to be paid to news; - to foster debate on tools of verification and fact - checking, digital media security, freedom of expression; - to increase key learning competencies including communication in foreigner language, cultural aware awareness, social and digital competencies; - to raise knowledge and understanding of young people on YouthPass, its role; - provide space for developing new project ideas under Erasmus + Programme, KA1. We plan to meet project objectives through youth exchange involving 42 participants, including about 20 participants with fewer opportunities. The youth exchange will be based on non-formal education and it will reflect the priorities and objectives of Erasmus + Programme. Concretely, youth exchange ‘‘Media Tools for Active Youth” is directly meeting following priorities set for 2020: - it promotes diversity and intercultural dialogue, common values of freedom, tolerance and especially it is enhancing media literacy, critical thinking and sense of initiative of young people. Youth exchange will include young people from different countries and backgrounds. It will include activities enabling intercultural learning. They will learn about their practices towards media literacy in other countries, about situations in their communities and moreover, they will have an opportunity to get to know traditions and habits of other cultures through intercultural evenings. Media literacy and critical thinking are key topics of the youth exchange. Participants will raise their knowledge on media literacy but also take part in practical activities with the aim to raise their capacities to analyse media messages. Part of the youth exchange will be a session on Erasmus + Programme especially paying attention to YouthPass. The participants will increase their knowledge of the programme and furthermore they will have an opportunity to work on ideas for future projects. It means that youth exchange will encourage the initiative of young people, as well. During the youth exchange participants will acquire the necessary and specific technical knowledge in the field of media literacy with a special emphasis on online blogging and community organizing, and parallel to these, they will also attain expertise and attitudes through modules developed on the theme of active participation that will assist them in their attempt to successfully get involved in the life of their community and to design and implement online advocacy actions as well as campaigns. Moreover, we are also convinced that the participants will through participation in this project to develop set of practical competencies that are essential for 21st century and which they can apply in their future career path. Moreover, the participants will be also encourage to transfer new gain competencies to young people from their local communities, make them media literate, digitally skilled and empower them to take active part in life of their communities and react issues that matters for them.
