The primary goal of the project, is to teach youth workers how to shoot, edit and distribute online videos. We want to empower youth workers and youth leaders with the skill set and knowledge necessary for them to collaborate with youths in making online video content - videos which would carry strong social messages and which can in some instances lead to significant social change within a local, regional, national or international community. The usage of online video in a youth work context, is likely to enhance creativity, innovation and leadership within youth themselves, as well as introduce youth to creative and productive usages of the internet and technology which could lead youngsters to take an interest in a variety of related career fields including STEMS, marketing, journalism or artistic disciplines. We believe that the usage of online video by youth is likely to be a highly effective means for them to communicate with wider society, feel part of their community and even aid policy makers understand some of the issues they face. A particular emphasis of our program will be placed on working with youth workers in developing ways to encourage youth to work on online video projects that promote equity, social cohesion, and active citizenship as well as other European values. A secondary goal of the project, is to aid youth workers understand the media landscape and in particular how youths interact with modern forms of technology, and some of the negative aspects related to media, including the phenomena and mechanisms of “fake news”. Detailed objectives of the project and how they fit EU policy are the following: Europe 2020 Objectives for smart growth As part of the Europe 2020 strategy, the commission aims to bring economic growth within the EU partly by inciting innovation and fostering a digital society. Our program will empower youth workers with the skill set and knowledge necessary for them to collaborate with youths, and aid them acquire some ICT related skills, which could lead them to take an interest in a variety of related career fields including STEMS, media or arts related fields, resulting in further digitalisation of society. Increasing digital competencies Fostering digital competencies, remains one of the cornerstones of the commission's objective for 2020 and by offering training focussed on Digital Fabrication to youth workers, we are offering training at the forefront of technological change, equipping youth workers with knowledge they can then transmit to youngsters themselves. Overall objectives of the renewed framework for European cooperation in the youth field (2010-2018) The multi-nationality of participants, and of Digital Esteem’s team should enable participants to interact and network together, fostering European wide networking. We aim to encourage participants to continue interacting and working with each other, possibly collaborating on new European projects together with an emphasis on continuing work we will have initiated. Curb overly consumerist behaviors by increasing digital competencies Whilst we are undeniably becoming more connected a lot of the behaviours we partake in tend to be consumeristic in nature, rather than productive or creative. We often use the internet in a very basic way, not embracing the full range of capabilities it offers; yet the capabilities we lack could be critical in securing better job opportunities and contributing further to the economy and society. Our program will therefore help educators and youth workers to turn youth's negative and counterproductive online behaviors into positive and constructive ones.
