Objectives

International youth exchanges have been established in the city of Soest for many years and are an integral part of annual planning. The stable and trusting cooperation with the partner countries should also be continued in 2020. Despite, or perhaps because of, the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the sad development of the war in Ukraine, it was important for the organizations involved to hold the meeting as soon as it was possible again in order to provide the young people involved with a positive, empowering experience. The youth exchange entitled "Climate Action for our common future - Be a changemaker" aimed to bring young people from the participating partner countries into contact with each other and to engage in a sustainable, intercultural exchange, particularly on the topic of climate protection. The various aspects of the topic were to be explored using creative and youth-friendly methods. The youth encounter comprised a preparation phase, the activity itself and a final presentation, follow-up and evaluation. The continuous participation of the participants was an important element and a basic principle of the camp. Mutual, personal, cultural and shared knowledge of Europe/the EU was also an important part of the project. The subtitle of the youth meeting "Be a changemaker" encouraged the young people to enable and implement changes in their own actions - how can we become "changemakers" together and what can I do for climate protection with my daily decisions. The transfer to local, European and global climate policy was also highlighted, addressed and discussed. In various workshops, the participants were able to explore the topic in an artistic and creative way and prepare and carry out a joint final presentation. The exchange strengthened the young people's personal development and promoted the development of their intercultural skills. The strengthening of self-confidence, the experience of self-efficacy, the promotion of critical thinking and the formation of one's own opinion as well as the creation of a European awareness, the learning or deepening of knowledge about basic European values, such as democracy, respect for human rights, diversity and non-discrimination, are just some of the learning objectives that were promoted by the youth exchange.
