Objectives

Active citizenship is a process of becoming responsible for one’s surrounding, for other individuals and for society in which we live. This responsibility can take many shapes and forms. It is not responsibility which one can or should be forced to accept but one which young people freely choose to engage in. It is voluntarily commitment to the development of a society and tackling ‘global’ problems on local level. As have been mentioned above, many young people have desires, passions and will to participate and to act for betterment of society as a whole. It may not be expressed through voting or in formal ways, but it is there. This is where youth organizations can come in and reshape youth activities as a tool for social, political, cultural and even economical change. With this project we made attempt to build the capacities of youth work multipliers in use of advocacy, campaigning and lobbying tools in order to effectively influence local and national policies in a youth field. More specific objectives of our project were: • To increase youth workers capacity to effectively use advocacy, campaigning and lobbying tools and mechanisms; • To promote partnership approach among youth organisations at national and regional level; • To raise youth organisations awareness of participation in decision making process as necessary condition for societal change. • To explore active citizenship issues from participants own experience and the resources and opportunities available to address issues of concern through democratic, civil and civic engagement; • To critically (and constructively) reflect on barriers to participation and possible approaches to overcoming these barriers; • To identify local opportunities for community engagement, leadership and participation. Identify locally specific routes to influence decision-making and ways to create stronger voice and identity with their own youth groups; • To explore possibilities for utilization of advocacy, campaigning and lobbying tools for their youth work activities • To facilitate the exchange and the sharing of experiences in the field of democratic citizenship and youth participation; • To understand the basic concept of advocacy, campaigning and lobbying tools and its connection to active citizenship; • To develop creative and attractive ways to apply advocacy, campaigning and lobbying tools for youth activism, with a special emphasis on civic engagement; • To design and develop an action plan for youth action in democratic, civil and civic processes; Main focus our program was to address five main functions of advocacy: influence, information/sensitization, strategic partnerships, marketing of ideas and speaking up on social issues. The program developed interacts with all five function but also focus on main thrust of advocacy - influence, at various levels and across sectors and social structures. Participating youth workers were provided with examples of areas for influence within the public sector necessitating advocacy interventions like public programmes, strategic plans, projects, policies and laws. Within the social context, we refer to norms, practices, conventions, customs, and even behaviours of different institutions or individuals that may need to be changed for the common good. We aimed change of perspective and raised awareness of participating youth workers so that most of the participants start considering advocacy as necessary to changing the social, cultural and traditional context rather than reinforcing it.
