The main focus of our project was on Education for sustainable development (ESD) and connection of this field of education with youth education. Climate change has become one of the main topics in public discourse, so not just different stakeholders from politics, media, science and business deal with it, but it has also reached broad sections of the population and especially young people. There is an urgent need for action, to fundamentally consider one's own way of life, and act in a sustainable way in order to secure the prospects of future generations. Education for sustainable development plays a crucial role in this context, because it is a specific educational concept which connects diverse ecological, economic, social and cultural aspects in an innovative way. As such, ESD works on development of diverse knowledge and skills in relation to sustainable thinking and ways of acting, as well as contributes to an increase in people's motivation to deal with wide ranges of topics on a permanent basis. Our objective was to connect four organizations from four countries (Germany, Slovenia, Greece and Serbia) i.e. from four different contexts, introduce them with each other and in the course of four study visits (one in each country) enable them to present their work, their concepts and methods, best practice examples of their own and their surroundings, as well as to participate together in programme with professional youth workers from other countries, discuss diverse issues and exchange experience with them. We were especially interested in the extent to which public discussion of the questions of climate change and sustainable development have influenced (or not) the field of education, above all extracurricular youth education in these four countries. And vice versa, to what extent educational structures and institutions in these countries (can) contribute to public discussions in regard to sustainable development. And especially, how do we convey new, positive visions of a society of the future and how do we create hope, motivation and confidence in our educational work? Through such activities, our intention was to achieve an Improvement of professional, didactic, social and intercultural skills of the employees of the involved partner groups. Furthermore we aimed to develop a lasting partnership with the four partner groups involved and expand their capacities to strengthen further participation in international projects. Achieving these goals translates into a long-term empowerment and capacity building for diverse stakeholders in the field of youth education and youth work, both at local and regional level, as well as in an international context.
