The main aim of BRIDGEWORKS e.V. (Germany), ECHODRAMA Cultural Group (Greece) and ASSOCIATION ACT’DEM (France) in carrying out the "Multicultural Art for Cultural Integration" (MACI) project on Tilos Island, Greece, is to equip the participants (some of them being immigrants and refugees) with competences and methods so as to promote diversity, intercultural dialogue, cultural exchange and cultural integration, as well as to address the needs of marginalised youth, including immigrants and refugees, and facilitate their cultural integration in the European environment. During the mobility activity, the participants will seek ways to develop contemporary multicultural creations in music, dance and theatre, incorporating elements from different cultures, including immigrants’ and refugees’ cultures. These creations will have as a result to provide respect for cultural diversity, to offer the participants the opportunity to identify common values with persons from different countries and to facilitate the cultural integration of immigrants and refugees. The island of Tilos was selected because: - It has shown remarkable hospitality for the refugees and it has been used as an example of hospitality and integration by UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency). - The harmonic co-existence between the inhabitants and the refugees will create an example for the youth workers and will become the most appropriate background for the better implementation of the project. - Its municipal government has expressed an interest in supporting the implementation of this project. The main needs that this project is seeking to address are: - the need for the cultural integration of marginalised people, - the need for generating intercultural and interfaith dialogue, as well as respect for diverse cultures and cultural expressions, using multicultural art as a tool, - the need to increase the participants’ awareness of cultural integration issues and their capacities in creating multicultural artistic activities which integrate elements of different cultures, including immigrants’ and refugees’ cultures, in contemporary European culture, - the need to live in Europe whose borders are connected through cultural ties in a peaceful coexistence and cultural integration. The specific objectives of this project are: 1. to improve the quality of non-formal teaching in youth work, enhancing peer learning and cooperation between organisations in the youth field; 2. to enhance the capacity of organisations and youth workers in their support for young marginalised people, including immigrants and refugees; 3. to foster an intercultural dialogue that intends to be an inspiration for learning about diversity issues; 4. to improve the capacities of the participants in creating contemporary multicultural art pieces incorporating elements of other cultures (including elements of the refugees’ and immigrants’ cultures), thus facilitating the cultural integration of immigrants and refugees in European culture; 5. to improve the skills of participants as far as integration issues are concerned, using as an example the good practice of the local community of Tilos; 6. to help young marginalised people to socialise and express themselves through multicultural artistic activities; 7. to facilitate the integration of young immigrants and refugees in Europe using the experience of those youth workers who are themselves immigrants and refugees.
