Objectives

At the youth meeting, which took place in Neuenhagen near Berlin (Germany), about 30 young people with disadvantages and disabilities from Lithuania, Italy, Finland and Germany got to know and appreciate each other. Through games and sports, visits to cultural events and cooking together, mutual inhibitions and prejudices as well as the fear of foreigners were broken down in 9 programme days. The challenges of the climbing forest, swimming in the nearby lake, sightseeing in Berlin and football training made it possible to experience togetherness in a multicultural group. The sports activities included in the programme not only strengthened the sense of togetherness in the multicultural group, but also demonstrated the benefits of sports in general and team sports in particular. The young people learned that despite language barriers and socialisation in different cultures, verbal and non-verbal communication and dialogue are possible. Furthermore, sport also teaches them to follow rules and to master challenges, which strengthens their self-confidence. The Youth Exchange also encouraged the young people to be more open and confident about longer mobility activities, such as internships abroad. The youth exchange sustainably strengthened the partnership between the four participating institutions and enabled an exchange of methods for working with young people with special needs.
