Objectives

“Stories create community, enable us to see through the eyes of other people, and open us to the claims of others.” – Peter Forbes. Stories were the main ingredient of this project and a tool to introduce the diversity which prevails nowadays in Europe. We want to approach the topic of xenophobia and human rights by the use of creative ways of storytelling resulting in a radio show. The youth exchange “Speak Up - Human rights on Air” brought together 30 youngsters from six countries together to raise awareness about the described topic. The topic was discussed and elaborated by the use of different storytelling techniques from creative writing to theater. Arising from non-formal learning techniques those stories and ideas were the base for a radio production broadcasted by the Radio “Hertz 87.9” from Bielefeld. Especially radio as media, which is accessible for the whole population has, as a public tool of information, provides a huge potential to affect social perception and opinion of xenophobia. Through showcasing in which way people can engage creatively in activism, we wanted to encourage participants to become more actively engaged in their own communities. The central objectives of the project were the following: • Increase awareness of sоcial and individual human rights and fоster intercultural competence of participants; • Use non-formal educational methods tо share ideas and come up with sоlutions against xenophobia in participating countries to support the development into a (more) inclusive society (locally and globally); • Get to knоw more about European values (value of human rights/diversity/respect/tolerance of different cultures); • Improve participants’ social and civic competence, consequently increasing their civic engagement; • Increase their sense of initiative and entrepreneurship; • Share cultures and learn from diversity, which young people are going to encоunter during the project, as well as diverse experiences they are going to share; • Learn how to communicate differences, young people encounter in their everyday lives, in order to form an appreciation and celebration of diversity; • Provide a networking opportunity for youth that might enable future international activities between different countries; • Strengthen cooperation between youth from partner organizations; Through this exchange we aimed to open a space for exchange and mutual understanding in order to develop a feeling for a European identity, a mutual understanding between cultures, using creative tools as transmitters that guide the conversation and not individual prejudices and stereotypes. We wanted to enable a discussion about existing problems and the conversation about possible solutions or even utopias. This encounter was, first and foremost a space for youth to express, share, debate, so that in the process of discussion they may challenge their perspectives and form their own opinion about the topic. The held exchange is in line with Erasmus + objectives by fostering social inclusion and equity through educating youth about human rights with a focus on xenophobia in order to celebrate diversity within Europe and beyond its borders.
