In the project "Young Europeans: That's our message!" we asked what it takes to feel seen, heard and understood as a young EU citizen. The young people were to be interviewed as experts in their own field and develop their own questions on the topic. Young people in France and also in Germany often belong to disadvantaged social groups and rarely experience their own self-efficacy because they are prevented from doing so by economic barriers, cultural discrimination or educational disadvantage. In order to initiate an exchange among them, we wanted to go in search of traces in the everyday life of these young people, to find commonalities but also differences. The content of this exchange was the question of where European decisions, democratic processes or political institutions influence their lifeworld and life chances and, conversely, how the young people can influence these decisions for their part. With the project we aimed to contribute to the reduction of communication barriers in intercultural situations. The young people were to be encouraged as well as to encourage each other to increase mutual sociability. Together, they were to look for non-verbal forms of expression of young people's will in the cityscape of Aubervilliers. They should seek experiences of self-efficacy through the articulation of their interests and opinions or in negotiating differences of opinion. In methodologically underpinned inter- and transcultural settings, we wanted to stimulate a change of perspective. We wanted to support the young people to improve their personal development, their engagement as active citizens of their society and beyond. This also included creating awareness and understanding of other cultures and countries among the participants. With this project, we aimed to increase young people's opportunities for international networking, active participation in society and developing a sense of civic engagement in their city, country and Europe, as well as a European identity. Through the cooperation in the project, the expansion of the town twinning between Aubervilliers and Jena should also be promoted. The partner organisations should be given the chance to further develop their competences in international cooperation.
