Objectives

The reality of the NGO sector is that ensuring sustainability is much harder compared to for-profit companies and the private sector. As partner organizations on this project have a good network and knowledge of NGOs in their community, we analyzed the situation and noticed that organizations with long-term existence, good team and strong impact have a Strategy that was skillfully developed and they stick to it in their work. More importantly, they understand a need to revise their Strategies at least every 5 years, due to changing national and international environment (political, economic, and many other external factors). Partners on this project were organizations with different profiles and years of existence, but all of them needed to improve their strategic planning skills and knowledge. Not just for their own benefit but for them to be able to transfer that renewed knowledge to other organizations within their communities. Community needs and situations are ever-changing therefore NGOs need to learn how to be flexible with their strategic planning as well. Our main goal was to teach youth workers how to develop a comprehensive strategy that focuses not only on financial stability but social responsibility strategy based on the same principles that apply for CSR strategies. Including SDGs and following their principles is something almost obligatory for all NGOs, regardless of their sphere of work. This way, we were able to incorporate those goals within our organizations’ Strategies. Partners on this project have been working closely together on several projects before and will continue to do so. Hence, it was important for our youth workers to learn about strategy development and revision together to better support each other through this process. Our organizations, although coming from different countries, were able to grow together which in the end enhanced our mutual partnerships and cooperation. Erasmus+ is one of the rare programmes that offer such opportunities. It brings together differences and similarities of various countries from different European regions. We were able to share our vision and goals, learn about our communities’ needs and exchange knowledge and good practices. That contributed to developing good quality Strategies in contrast to our previous Strategies which were developed isolated and only from one organization’s point of view and one national context. This project enabled all partners to create Strategies which have in depth information and guidelines regarding our international and EU level work which was also one of our goals. Objectives of our project were the following: - provide tools and knowledge to NGOs to analyse their current capacity and a potential that is not being used, to understand their strengths and weaknesses, explore both internal and external resources and turn them into realistic opportunities. - among all team members and workers, creating a habit of regularly checking their Strategy, creating and executing Action plans accordingly. Organizations need to understand that Strategies are there to be used and not just some documents you need to have on your shelves or websites. - to learn from each other, exchange knowledge and information about different national situations, build upon shared EU values and good practices and thus improve our partnership’s teamwork and future cooperation - enhancing abilities and knowledge of our youth workers and providing them opportunities within organizations to put that knowledge to use by organizing workshops for other youth workers and NGO members from local community Our long term goal was to contribute to more structured and focused activities on national, EU and international level in our future work. Furthermore, we wanted to equip youth workers with new skills and knowledge in not just strategy development, but also how to successfully follow and implement those written documents.
