The UNPACKAGED project represents an innovative theme that ought to interest and concern every single person in the situation of today´s Europe. In a world of consumerism, people often buy things they do not need and which therefore have no high value to them. They are replaceable and are often thrown away carelessly. National Geographic estimates that around 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every single year and this number tends to rise. Considering that most types of plastic take more than 400 years to break down, one does not want to imagine what our oceans will look like in the future if we do not find alternatives to our current lifestyle (National Geographic, 2019). This is just one of the multiple problems our society is facing nowadays. Health-threatening chemicals and the pollution of groundwater caused by microplastics are also huge aspects of the whole issue (BUND, 2019). We are facing an amount of waste, that cannot even be described; especially waste of raw materials, consumer goods and food. By using up the planets ending ressources without giving back, we are promoting climate change, soil degradation, extinction of various endangered species of animals, decreasing health and many more. These are the aspects that cannot be accepted or ignored. People are starting to notice that these nature-endangering materials could be easily replaced by other materials or no materials at all, but these alternatives are difficult to find in local shops and, moreover, these alternative packagings are usually overly expensive. We wanted to address these issues and encourage youngsters, who are the future of our European Union, to reflect more profoundly on what they genuinely need and desire to buy and therefore be more aware of their behavior as consumers when it comes to shopping. Besides of promoting environmentally conscious consumer behaviour and furthermore the impact that Erasmus+ programmes can have, the main objective was to build a mobile zero waste shop together with young people. 25 young people from 5 different countries should receive the opportunity to take action, work as a team, create something new and get to know the meaning of social business & environmental responsibility.
