We wanted to give the teachers in the project an opportunity to experience the Norwegian concept for teacher training called MAM (Mastering Ambitious Math teaching). The concept points directly into the daily practice as a teacher and the teachers will develop new ways of teaching as well as for how to word as a reflecting team at the schools and in the municipalities. Furthermore the aim of the project was to provide inspiration for ready-to-use activities more aligned with the ambitions for a new way in math which was published in 2002 and has been on the agende ever since. One last aim of the course was for the Danish teachers to experience the Norwegian education system both in elementary school but mainly in regards of continued professional development. Another aim of the project was to further develop the municipality network amongst the math teachers and to fertilize the ground for future collaboration between the schools in a municipality.
In Denmark math is often tought in a very traditional manner with links to previous times and what was needed to participate in yesterday's society. The result is math classes based upon memorization of facts and calculation methods without context. For many years though there has been an agenda to move math in a more useful and competencies oriented direction with an emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, logical arguments, communication and modelling. The process of reaching this goal has been outsourced to the teacher to handle. In Norway to help the teachers make the necessary changes, they have successfully focused on continuing professional development of the teachers and have developed a concept of teacher training which has been a huge success. We wanted to make this concepts the core of an Erasmus+ project for math teachers in to Danish municipalities.
