Objectives

In light of the technological revolution and globalization, the demands of labour market are changing. The current tendencies move towards hiring people with ‘soft skills’, encompassing interpersonal and social competences. More and more employers are looking for people with strong interpersonal skills, able to adapt, react and cope with stressful situations. A recent survey showed that nowadays the following competencies are particularly valued by employers: cooperating, speaking and listening skills, planning & organizing skills, flexibility, networking skills, taking initiatives and acting independently. In this constantly changing environment, young people go through enormous pressure to succeed in their studies, hoping to find their place in job market. Facing the challenges of being unemployed, young people are more likely to experience anxiety and depression. This frequently leads to losing self-confidence and increases the feeling of hopelessness. The situation is more challenging for young people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, who due to linguistic and educational barriers are often considered as ‘low-skilled’. Therefore, this project aimed at empowering young people to reveal their full potential, by equipping them with tools for personal development and improving their soft skills which would facilitate their entrance to labour market. The main activity of ‘BEcoming’ was youth exchange, which was implemented in Aulum, Denmark, bringing together 40 young people and group leaders from Italy, Slovakia, Lithuania, Romania, Poland and Denmark. While implementing this youth exchange, we managed to reach the following objectives: • Promoting the concept of self-care, healthy lifestyle and regular practice of mindful techniques as a way to build resilience and cope with stress and anxiety; • Improving participants ‘soft skills’ by introducing them variety of methods and tips in line with the needs of current labor market; • Encouraging participants to think ‘out of the box’ and foster their creativity which will impact the quality of their job applications; • Empowering participants to believe in themselves, increase their self-confidence and self-esteem, in their path of becoming the best version of themselves; • Stimulating the creation of follow-up projects, tackling various aspects of youth unemployment in Europe. The project addressed one of the specific objectives of the Erasmus+ Programme, in terms of improving the level of key competences and skills of young people, with particular regard to their relevance for the labour market. It also echoed the current focus of Mobility Project for Young People and Youth Workers, through equipping youth people with competences and methods for their professional development. For achieving our objectives, a variety of methods of non-formal education were carried out, such as team and trust-building activities, outdoor activities, brainstorming, small group discussions, role plays and cooking together. Besides, this youth exchange included innovative methods and wellbeing practices, including storytelling, creative writing, guided meditation practices, mindfulness techniques and yoga.
