Objectives

As a new reality has emerged, our daily lives can no longer be imagined without the internet, which leaves us with two main challenges to be addressed. First, to distinguish between real and fake data, when dealing with enormous amount of information. Second, to act responsibly, in a world in which anonymity risks fueling hatred and stereotypes, through manipulation. The Partners found that if young people are to become actively involved citizens, they need support in understanding and exercising the concept of E-participation; one that is still quite new and with many ramifications. They consider Media Literacy is a pre-condition for E-participation, as young people’s online involvement into the democratic process need to be founded on strong knowledge, skills, tools, and attitudes, in order to ensure the internet is used to citizens’ advantage. The Partners identified that there was a need to strengthen Media Literacy and the use of the internet as a channel to organize civil action, in order for the online world to be a useful tool for active citizenship. Therefore, the project aimed at strengthening online civic engagement of young people, by giving youth workers tools to address Media Literacy and promote E-participation. The objectives of the project were as follows: 1. To deepen youth workers’ knowledge and understanding regarding the Media; 2. To give youth workers tools to strengthen young people’s critical thinking skills; 3. To give youth workers tools to support young people recognize Fake News and propaganda; 4. To give youth workers tools to enable a proactive attitude amongst young people towards acquiring and spreading correct information; 5. To share best practices about online engagement of young people; 6. To develop guidelines regarding online engagement of young people; 7. To deepen youth workers’ understanding of online communities and networks, as a tool for active citizenship and participation.
