Objectives

Besides the involvement together with youth-centers and youth-association from all over Europe in the network named "Drums for Peace", Arttrain has also the function of being the development-unit for the international school-cooperation "Exchanges for All" (EFA), which since 2015 has implemented youth-exchanges/mobility-camps as a innovative learning-tool for 8th grade students (age 14), who are facing a catastrophic decrease of learning-motivation. As we wrote in the application: "This actual project seeks to export this way of cooperation to the North Nordic /North Europe and directly involve schools in Örnsköldsvik (650 km north of Stockholm), Tampere (FI) and Karksi-Nuia (EE) and so to increase the cooperation between the 4 countries around The Baltic Sea in order to: - Give the participating young people a feeling and experience of being a part of Europe, which especially is needed in geographically isolated cities as Örnsköldsvik and Karksi-Nuia - make the cooperation between the schools more sustainable - Make more visible the values of youth-exchanges as a learning tool for schools. It further on said: "the project is looking into offering solution to, first of all, the problem of drop-outs and those lacking the motivation to learn, then those who are socially unengaged and for whom mainstream education is not enough to get them going." During the first years EFA worked mainly along the south side of the Baltic Sea, but the actual project North in Europe (NinE) was an attempt to create a northern EFA-group, which may implement exchanges without to much transportation, as we with our overall theme "Stop Climate Changes" are avoiding airplanes. In the application for "North in Europe" we did apply for both the now implemented exchange and one in Finland, where the last one, in Finland, would have consolidated the new EFA-North-branch, but even if we "only" have made the exchange 16-23rd September in this partnership of organisations from DK, EE, FI & SE, we think we reached a lot and all, that we aimed for: - We managed to involve schools from all 4 countries, which was the task for for example Arttrain as official partner and for Örnsköldsvik Municipality as well. - We managed to bring students and teachers from 4 Nordic-Baltic schools together, and for the FI-school it was their very first time in Exchanges for All and in a mobility-project for young people. - We managed to implement "North in Europe" true to our project-theme "Stop Climate Changes" and solely using bus-, train- and ferry-transportation, even if this was much more complicated and time-consuming to organize, than just booking air-tickets - and even if we, as we now know, can't count 3 traveling days on the home-tour, as is possible in E+ in calls from after Covid-19. - We managed to give all involved an experience for their life during their days together including new friends from other countries, and we managed also to give all involved a new and somehow different impression of Europe, which links to the project-name, as a view on a map will show, that the project-venue in Stubbekøbing somehow is the centre of Europ, having in mind how big and long countries we have with both Sweden and Finland. Our partnerschool in Swedish Örnsköldsvik is situated 1.300 km. north of Stubbekøbing, and from Stubbekøbing to Milan Google Maps says 1.328 km. - We managed to bring the feeling of being a part of Europe also to the 2 distant towns of Örnsköldsvik and Karksi-Nuia, and in the last the participated 16-23.9 also in 2 Nordplus Junior funded mobility-camps, so all young people of age 14 from the small place, with just 4.000 people living, were involved. Already in May 2015 researchers from Danish University College Absalon followed 3 different exchanges and issued the report "International Exchanges as a Learning Tool" (Roskilde, January 2016), where the were focussing on 6 different parameters, which all developed greatly by taking part in such a project: • Foreign language speaking • Knowledge about other countries • Understanding of democracy and human rights • Personal development • Art-based learning • Inclusion and motivation of young people. "First and foremost, the quantitative and qualitative research data indicate that the investigated international youth exchanges have a significant and positive impact on the students’ knowledge of other countries. This appears to be quite an essential result of an Erasmus-funded project, but, above all, it fully accords with current trends and policies on internationalization, both in general terms and specifically in educational terms. Thus, the overall aim of using international exchange as a learning tool, the “Exchanges for All” project appears to be successful."
