Labour market issues incl. career guidance / youth unemployment

Objectives

FORA Copenhagen together with the partners in this project had noticed the following problem: a large proportion of young people did not consider formal education to be sufficient in preparing them for employment and they also believed there lacks focus in educational institutions on developing crucial labour market skills such as creativity, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset. Furthermore, according to the European Commission, 40% of employers couldn’t find people with the right skills to fill their vacancies, and too few people have the preparation, mind-sets and competences to set up their own businesses or look for new opportunities” (please refer to https://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=1146&langId=en). Therefore, the partners believed it necessary to invest in youth career engagement and workforce improvement activities to provide young people with necessary skills, knowledge, and experience in entering the job market. To address the issue at hand, the partners chose to focus on mentoring as a valuable tool for filling the existing gap between the ability of formal education systems to prepare young people for employment and the expected knowledge, skills, and competencies by the job market. By increasing the capacity of youth organisations to provide structured mentoring programmes, young people would benefit by the possibility to explore various career opportunities, build up their interpersonal skills, receive support for their social and emotional well-being, and work on their self-esteem, self-reliance, and sense of initiative. The project’s main aim was increasing young people’s participation in the labour market by improving youth workers and youth organizations’ capacities in mentoring young people for employability. The main objectives of the project were: - To deepen youth workers’ understanding on the importance of mentoring for employability - To provide youth workers and youth organizations tools, methods and techniques in mentoring young people for employment - To provide youth workers examples of mentorship practices in actively supporting young people’s sense of initiative and entrepreneurship - To promote quality improvements in youth work through enhanced cooperation between organisations in the youth field. To address the aim and objectives of the project, the partners organised a 9-day training course held in Slettestrand, Denmark for 29 youth workers from the following countries: Denmark, Romania, Turkey, Lithuania, Czech Republic, the Republic of North Macedonia, Hungary, and Poland.
