We had been using something that we call "treasure hunt" on our youth exchanges and saw a lot of potential in this type of activity. We felt that many youth exchanges that are being carried out are not involving any interesting non-formal methods and do not gamify the learning experience. Treasure hunts have been one of our most successful activities in all previous events and it has not only been fun, but also very educational and unifying. In order to provide some context, treasure hunt in our work is basically an event which takes place during a youth exchange (but can be used in many other contexts) and involved youth workers and participants working together to create a storyline, characters, challenges and other elements that form a cohesive experience. Participants are divided into small groups and they move between locations where there will be a new challenge waiting for them each time. Through those activities, participants are learning more about a specific topic, improve their ability to work in teams, etc. etc. Our goal was to take this event, divide it into pieces and create workshops around those pieces. For example how to create a story, how to create challenges, how to manage risks and so on. Also, to further analyze how the method can be used, what can be improved and so on. Specific objectives of this Training Course were: - Introduce the Treasure Hunt method to youth workers / youth leaders. - Increase the relevant competencies like storytelling, improvisation, acting, public speaking, level design, and first aid. - Increase participant safety and mitigate risks that come with this method. - Explore the ways how this non-formal method could be more widely adopted in youth work. - Share experiences and knowledge between youth workers. - Increase international cooperation between the organisations and their members. We also wanted to create a guideline for ourselves and others. These small materials would make the method more accessible to other young people and youth workers in our organisation.
