Objectives

The main objectives as driving axes of our project were: The development and improvement of teachers' skills to face the new educational reality, multicultural classes. The needs arising in this new socio-cultural environment require differentiation both in the methodological approaches and in the attitude of the subjects (teachers and students) towards the other-different. Therefore, teacher training is oriented towards holistic models of approach to education: an informed, mentally resilient teacher who can feel strong and secure in order to manage diverse situations and challenges. The experience of other European countries is a source of knowledge for us as the exchange of experiences and practices always contributes to the empowerment of teachers.

Background

Our school is a multicultural school in the center of Athens. The student population is 110 children of which 29% are Bangladeshi, 25% Albanian, 25% refugee, 20% Chinese and just 1% Greek. The elements that pervade our educational everyday life and necessity are those of democratic education, intercultural sensitivity and awareness - awareness of inclusion, that is, elements that make up education for peace at a given historical moment where the refugee issue and its treatment are not only a European but also a global cutting-edge issue. In this context, our needs are: the effective response to the educational needs of refugee and immigrant children, their inclusion in Greek society and the emotional, mental and professional empowerment of teachers to recognize, raise awareness and finally respond to the new challenges with flexibility and efficiency.
