Objectives

Through the training of its teachers the school sought to acquire the necessary knowledge and apply practices aiming at a) the development of a positive learning environment and harmonious relationships in the classroom, b) the design and organization of a learning environment that enhances cohesion and prevents marginalization, c) tackling conflict, bullying and lack of discipline, d) improving the overall communication framework between all stakeholders in the school community, e) its cooperation with the relevant local bodies and authorities so that the knowledge and the benefits gained from its participation in the program can be transformed into a mechanism usable by both the school itself and the rest of the educational community f) its promotion into a Sustainable School based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, namely objectives 3 (health & prosperity), 4 (quality education) and 10 (fewer inequalities), g) upgrading its European profile and the quality of its European partnerships.

Background

Because the School has seen a decrease in the number of its students, behaviour and communication problems from students who felt neglected and cut off from the lesson process, cases of student conflict and bullying and an increasing tendency of students to abstain from the lessons, it was a common belief among the teachers that a gap had been created between what the students expected from the School and what the School could offer them. Knowing that teaching and learning are affected by mental and emotional well-being, the School thought that it was necessary for its teachers to be equipped with the necessary knowledge, experiences and skills, so that they would be able to deal with these problems in a coordinated manner. Taking into account a) the special characteristics of several of its students (financially vulnerable groups, immigrants) b) their sense of alienation in the classroom, c) the distancing and abstention of many from the teaching process and d) the slowness of the State to intervene with the appropriate scientists within the School, the School decided to train members of the teaching staff on issues of school dropout, management of class problems and conflicts, improvement of the learning atmosphere.
