Access for disadvantagedInclusion - equityTeaching and learning of foreign languages

Objectives

As we have previously mentioned, our center carries out the bilingual program promoted by the regional government of the Junta de Andalucía and at the same time it is educational compensation due to the area in which it is located. This combination mayo be seen as incompatible, but we intend to safeguard it with measures such as the achievement of this project, facilitating the inclusion of our SED students in danger of exclusion for economic and social reasons in our bilingual program. In this way, our students would not only acquire a more complete academic development but also one of a holistic nature, broadening cultural perspectives and letting them know how important it is to have a proper command on a foreign language. We have to emphasize that the profile of these students is characterized by their minimal knowledge not only in English as well as their refusal to get involved in the normal development in the English classes, but also in their own L1. In addition, most of them share a profile focused on professional training, with a high probability of joining into the labor market early, which is known for requiring basic minimums in L2.

Background

The main aim of this Erasmus + proyect, promoted by IES Valle Del Sol from Álora (Málaga, Spain), is to improve the inclusion of the students who belong to the compensatory education program into the bilingual program of our institution. To this end, our teaching staff is willing to improve their professional competence and acquire a series of tools in order to cope successfully with our students’ needs. Most of our students are from rural areas and from the social housing settled near our school. Taking this into account, IES Valle Del Sol has set itself the goals of improving and adapting our students learning to the future society’s demands thanks to a more practical and international teaching. This will be achieved by different methodology and ICT tools, but without relinquishing general knowledge and always helping those who need it the most.
