Objectives

On the one hand, we wanted to get specific formation about how to run a programme devoted to sustainability at school and we needed to know proper tools to promote among our students a real concern about the problem. On the other hand, we needed to learn about the matter from other more experienced schools and look at how the were running similar projects to the one we wanted to implement in our school. Finally, we needed to involve the whole education community and local institutions in the elaboration and implementation of such a project in order to make it efficient and realistic. The real aim was to write an environmental programme, which, finally, after some discussions, we decided it should focus on establishing correct, efficient and realistic mechanism of recycling as well as on promoting a more sustainable consumption of traditional local products instead industrial bakery, so that the level of rubbish would be reduced and, at the same time, we would be improving the food habits of ouor students. The final product of this Erasmus project would be a writen programme which had to be realistic and its implementation at school.

Background

In our school, for years, we have tried to implement measures devoted to recycling and promotion of better and healthier food habits among the students, but we have not achieved relevant advance so far. We noticed that, every day, a lot of rubbish was generated at school without being recycled and most students used to eat industrial products for breakfast, with highly polluting envelopes. If we add the amount of rubbish the school itself generates, for example, at the canteen, packaging of school materials, old books, paper from old projects, etc. we really produce a lot of rubbish. Then, we thought we needed to improve the situation. In spite of the different measures we had previously tried to implement, we had not been able to reduce rubbish or promote among students a real consciousness about the problem. In addition, our local administration does not offer great support to improve the situation. Thus, we thought of the necessity of implementing a programme for recycling which had to be realistic and efficient, but for that purpose, we needed specific formation on the matter and, also, we needed to look at other schools with better experience. So, a KA1 Erasmus project was the key.
