Objectives

The objectives of the project arose from the needs that we find in our day to day and are the following: -Identify and prevent the causes that lead to absenteeism and early school leaving. -Find strategies to reduce the rate of absenteeism in our school and, therefore, of early school leaving. -Train teachers in awareness to be able to empathize with students from disadvantaged groups. -Reflect on the functioning of our school, compared to other Europeans, to detect areas for improvement. -Observe good practices in terms of space management in other European schools. -Modify our spaces to make them friendlier and create pleasant and trusting environments. -Improve the skills and abilities of the members of the Management Team in terms of managing the school. -Observe good practices in the classroom to integrate students at risk of social exclusion or special educational needs. -Learn and observe new methodologies and the use of new technologies. -Observe the implementation of Cooperative Learning. -Improve the training of the members of the conflict resolution room (Live classroom). -Adapt the protocol of the conflict resolution room to the new knowledge. -Introduce good practices from our European colleagues in our school to motivate students more. -Stimulate and motivate students so that they miss fewer lessons and make them feel part of their teaching process. -Improve our Reading Promotion Plan. -Train CLIL teachers immersed in the Plurilingual Plan. -Readjust the didactic programs of the different Departments and the PGA to include the new strategies. -Improve the intercultural communicative competence of teachers. -Increase the motivation of teachers. -Promote in our participants creative and reflective abilities that allow them to improve their practice. -Strengthen coordination between teachers at different work levels (departments, level, groups...). -Facilitate professional socialization. -Promote the European dimension and guarantee the internationalization process initiated in our center. -Strengthen our capacity and ability to cooperate successfully with our European partners. -Contact partners with whom to carry out future European projects.

Background

This project encompassed two challenges that we have in our secondary school: absenteeism and multilingualism. IES Cayetano Sempere is a very active school in new methodologies and projects. We have a fairly diverse student body with an average level of absenteeism in the lower grades. We try to act to manage the problem of school absenteeism and the behavioral problems derived from these students with little motivation and future prospects. Our school is part of ConviElx, a network of centers in Elche that works on aspects of coexistence in order to reduce school absenteeism and improve academic performance. Based on this collaboration, we set up a conflict resolution classroom where students involved in a low-intensity conflict are made to reflect or follow-up and mediation tasks are developed for those of greater severity. On a weekly basis, the teaching staff involved in this classroom meets with the Management and Counselling Team to assess and reach agreements in the most problematic cases to establish appropriate resolution strategies or request the necessary external help (Previ, mental health, social workers). For this reason, several members of the conflict resolution classroom together with members of the Management Team have requested both attendance at training courses on the subject of absenteeism and periods of observation of good practices. Likewise, our center is involved in numerous innovation projects and implementing cooperative learning. We are also part of the network of Multilingual Centers of the Valencian Community and we try to combine the learning of four languages: Spanish, Valencian, English and French. In our school we have the firm conviction that the acquisition of linguistic skills and the promotion of attitudes of respect and curiosity towards other cultural and linguistic communities by our students will facilitate their academic success, their employment, as well as their full integration as a citizen in society. Until now we had introduced some subject in English but we have problems to cover all subjects that must be in English according to our Linguistic Plan. Finally, our school is in the process of internationalization, we have carried out 1 Comenius, 3 KA1, 2 KA2 and 1 TCA.
