The TEMSIC project is aimed at teachers and students of educational centers of Early Childhood Education, Primary, Secondary, Upper Secondary and Vocational Training, in Spain, Italy and Austria, under the leadership of the NGOs InteRed, CESIE and Südwind. The intellectual results of the project were made available to the entire European educational community. In this project, schools become agents of change to transform our world. The current context with the Covid-19 pandemic and its socioeconomic effects magnify the situation of climate crisis, migration, care crisis... in which we were already. Therefore, promoting social inclusion by building a global, critical, responsible and active citizenship in the defense of equality, intercultural dialogue and the fight against discrimination and environmental destruction is the General Objective of this project. This responds to two of the priorities of this call: Social inclusion and Common values, commitment and civic participation. To promote this social inclusion and construction of global citizenship, the project has as a specific objective to promote innovative and transformative educational methods and practices. This follows the Eurydice report (2017) "Citizenship education in the European school context", which indicates that traditional teaching and learning methods are not the most appropriate for citizenship education. Betting on active, holistic, and collaborative methodologies means opting for a curricular development focused on competences instead of contents, and means putting the student at the center of the teaching-learning process, which helps to address early school leaving, which is also an objective of this project. The educational innovation through transformative methodologies proposed by this project was carried out through two components: one, the strengthening of teachers’ capacities and, the other, the development of educational resources to be used in educational practice. 364 teachers participated in online consultations, coordination meetings, supervision of the testing of the educational materials generated, and participation in multiplier events in Italy, Austria and Spain. The intellectual results of the project are divided into two types: 4 methodological support guides for teachers on innovative topics from a perspective of Global Citizenship Education (with practical guidelines to implement them in the classroom) and a series of 4 cooperative games in downloadable format (PDF.) and also in physical format, to promote inclusion and teamwork in the 4 educational stages (early childhood education, Primary, Secondary, Upper Secondary and Vocational Training). These cooperative games are designed to strengthen skills, so that students improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes, both individual and collective, to promote social inclusion and global citizenship, since they address issues related to the 2030 Agenda and major global challenges such as environmental sustainability or gender equality. 58 teachers and 707 students participated in the development and validation of these educational resources in 11 schools in the 3 countries. The selection of the educational centres and participating groups had as main criterion the presence of students at risk of dropping out of school and/or students of migrant origin. The balanced presence of girls and boys among the participants was also taken as a criterion. For the exchange of information on the experience of testing cooperative games in schools, a private area was created on the project website. Game-based learning is an innovative, active and participatory methodology that generates cohesion among the participants, which favors motivation and inclusion (key elements to stop school dropout). The approach to global challenges in games that need collaboration between different groups for their solution will favor the construction of global citizenship and favor inclusion in the classroom. The intellectual outputs and all the materials that compose them are available for free download on the website of the project and partner organisations, as well as on the Erasmus+ platform, School Education Gateway, in English, Spanish, German and Italian. This multiplies the target population reached by the project. In addition, in the case of cooperative games, a number of physical copies were printed for distribution among teachers who participated in the multiplier events of the project, as well as among teachers of schools that are part of the networks of partner organizations, and CESIE, InteRed and Südwind keep some copies to be used in their current and future work with schools in Italy, Spain and Austria.
The Project general objective responds to the current EU context and the need to promote Global Citizenship Education as a means to transform our world in crisis. To achieve the objectives described in the previous section, the project targeted the following results (R): R1 – Teachers with strengthened capacities on innovative and transformative educational methods to promote social inclusion from a Global Citizenship perspective. R2 – Students improve their knowledge, skills and attitudes, both individually and collectively, to promote social inclusion and global citizenship, through innovative and transformative educational resources. The Project expected the participation of over 120 teachers and 540 students in the Project activities: first, on the development of intellectual outputs (methodological support guides for teachers and cooperative games to promote inclusion and competencial learning for each educational stage) and second, on Multiplier Events. Another goal of the Project was to achieve a high rate of dissemination of all Project intellectual outputs (more than 2000 total downloads), in order to ensure that the developed educational resources reach a high number of teacher and education proffesionals in all EU.
Project partners (InteRed, CESIE and Südwind) planned this Project proposal in order to promote social and educational inclusion by building a global, critical, responsible and active citizenship in defense of equality, intercultural dialogue, and the fight against discrimination and environmental destruction. This Project aimed at promoting the role of schools (both teachers and students) as active citizens with a critical awareness of the global reality, capable of identifying the global challenges of today in order to transform them, in accordance with the 2030 Agenda and the EU values. This Project focused on new and transformative educational methodologies, since research as the Eurydice report (2020) points out that teachers must strengthen their capacities in citizenship education, and also indicates that new methodologies help teaching citizenship education from a multidimensional approach. Strengthening capacities of teachers and developing didactic resources based on innovative and transformative methodologies, also help addressing early school dropout, since new, active, and cooperative methodologies help overcoming obsolete educational methods that are identified as one of the causes of early school dropout.
