The 'Empowering Kids with Interactive Digital Library' is a groundbreaking initiative designed to seamlessly integrate literacy, reading comprehension, analytical thinking, and creative development within the realm of Primary and Secondary Education. This is achieved through a multi-lingual digital distance-learning platform, employing cross-disciplinary transfer effects, and enriched with artistic and cultural elements. The University of Malaga leads this project in collaboration with partners such as the University of Crete, Tashkent State Pedagogical University, I.V. College, and D.V. School. The project's primary objectives encompass: 1. Empowering education and training systems to adeptly navigate the challenges posed by the abrupt transition to online and distance learning. This is achieved through the creation of freely accessible digital educational resources licensed under Creative Commons. 2. Fostering robust and strategic collaboration among European Union educational institutions, digital technology providers, and experts in educational technologies. Together, they work towards the development of high-caliber digital resources and tools. 3. Supporting educators in honing their digital competencies while upholding the inclusivity of learning opportunities. 4. Facilitating students in acquiring critical reading and creative skills through engaging and innovative digital content. 5. Capitalizing on the growing convergence of communication mediums and institutional roles to craft and disseminate impactful digital content. 6. Adapting organizational structures within the education sector to effectively respond to digital transformations. 7. Sustaining fruitful partnerships for cooperative efforts in devising tailored solutions that address local challenges and realities." TARGET GROUP The project targets the involvement of more than 500 teachers, 5000 students at the primary and secondary school level in innovative activities promoting the use of digital resources for increasing young learners' literacy, reading, analytical thinking, and creative skills. In the long term, we target all teachers, parents, students at the primary and secondary school level as well as the Language and Literature Departments of universities, education faculties, researchers and policymakers, and all related stakeholders. ACTIVITIES There will be three Transnational Project Meetings (TPMs), the Kick-off meeting, an interim meeting for evaluation and corrections, and the final meeting for preparing the report, finalizing the outputs, dissemination and sustainability of the project. Three participants from each partner institution will participate in each TPMs. The project involves one short-term joint-staff training event (LTT) for joint work to set up a tailor-made framework for creating digital stories targeting the students between the age of 10-15. The 'Digital Story Writing Workshop' mobility will be hosted by UOC. This five-day event in December 2021 will engage 30 participants. It will encompass comprehensive training and activities focusing on the foundational steps of digital story creation. OUTPUTS The 'Empowering Kids with Interactive Digital Library' project is designed to achieve its goals through the creation of two key intellectual outputs. The first is a collection of Digital Storybooks, enhanced with interactive pre/while/post-reading activities and available in six languages. The second is a digital library web platform housing digital storybooks designed in six languages, alongside supplementary materials. To reach a broader audience within educational settings, the project will host two international multiplier events in Uzbekistan and Spain. These events aim to engage and benefit over 220 individuals. IMPACT The project aims to adapt traditional educational paradigms to the demands of the digital era, addressing the challenges and limitations of current educational systems during these exceptional times. It endeavours to catalyse crucial transformations at the local, national, and international levels. The student demographic targeted by this initiative is anticipated to enhance their literacy, reading proficiency, analytical thinking, and creativity through a lifelong learning perspective on literature. For educators, the objective is to utilize a rich, readily accessible digital library, replete with high-quality content that can seamlessly integrate into school curricula, regardless of time or location. This resource is designed to be freely available. Participants will refine their digital story-writing skills, a transferable expertise with far-reaching impacts for subsequent projects on organizational, national, or international scales. In the long run, we envision heightened interest from academics, researchers, curriculum developers, and policymakers in establishing interactive digital libraries, or adapting existing ones into a digital format, incorporating innovative approaches for societal benefit. By project completion, 30 individuals will have participated in Learning, Teaching, and Training (LTT) events, while over 220 will have engaged in multiplier events. The project's activities will directly benefit over 500 teachers and 5000 students. We project a positive impact on approximately 10,000 stakeholders.
Our project, with the design and publication of a Digital Platform in 6 different languages, aimed to favour the empowerment of children through equitable and free access to a digital library with stories with interactive activities, designed by experts and aimed at promoting digital skills, promoting interactive and personalised learning - offering a dynamic learning experience, with activities that favour the acquisition of knowledge in a practical way - and the stimulation of creativity and expression. Through our free platform, we provide children with the necessary tools for their integral development and to face the challenges of today's world. We would like to highlight as one of the most advantageous points of our project the fact that it addresses a pressing need of today, namely that children acquire digital skills to cope in an increasingly technological world. The interactive digital library promotes the development of the aforementioned digital skills by users, fostering digital literacy, which is essential for success in today's and tomorrow's society.
The application of Project for the design of a digital library in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic was prompted by the fact that the health crisis highlighted inequalities in access to education. During school lockdowns and closures, many people, especially those from disadvantaged communities or with limited resources, found it difficult to access educational materials and learning resources. Online education became a vital tool during the pandemic, but not all students had equal access to electronic devices or reliable internet connectivity. This created a digital divide that exacerbated pre-existing educational inequalities. We believe that the creation of digital libraries could play a key role in reducing these inequalities and gaps in education by reducing reliance on physical resources and facilitating access to information. In addition, digital libraries could offer resources adapted to different educational levels and specific needs, allowing for a more personalised and flexible education. Our project also offers materials in six different languages, which is an additional asset.
