When we decided to set up "Keep Calm: volunteers for the environment" we wanted to continue working for the empowerment of young people through leadership and active citizenship activities, such as volunteering tasks, which involve us fully in the problems of the society in which we live. For more than 20 years, Canfranc Foundation has had a team of committed young volunteers who have carried out voluntary activities in favour of minorities at risk of social exclusion during the academic year and in non-teaching periods, developing leadership skills and valuing their spirit of solidarity. We got in touch with our partner organisation in Portugal (Emergencia Social) which had the same aim as we were pursuing (to fight poverty and social exclusion by helping the most disadvantaged people in the slums of Lisbon). At the same time we learned that Lisbon had been designated as "European Green City 2020" and we thought it was an opportunity to combine the two objectives by carrying out this exchange. Due to the COVID19 pandemic we had to postpone the youth meeting in Lisbon to July 2021. The main objective of "Keep calm: volunteering for the environment" was twofold: to increase in our lives an active concern for those most in need (people) and the environmental awareness of communities (environment and nature). This dual objective is based on the objectives of the Erasmus+ programme: promotion of European values (equality, diversity, inclusion, solidarity, active citizenship and intercultural dialogue). This KA1 action has been carried out through volunteering activities and social time with children, young people and marginalised women, promoting intercultural and interreligious dialogue, the values of freedom, tolerance and respect for human rights and non-formal education activities (discussing, workshops, etc.) where we have been able to share ideas, experiences and knowledge about social exclusion and the environment. From this point, the workers and young participants have grown in active citizenship, being more responsible for the people around us who need us and for the nature of our usual environment. These have been the topics we have addressed with this project: Responsible citizenship and the environment.
