Objectives

Sustainable development has been integrated into EU policies and legislation, through the EU Sustainable Development Strategy, the EU 2020 Strategy and the Better Regulation Agenda for the EU. The EU played a decisive role in shaping the global 2030 Agenda. The Agenda is fully consistent with Europe's vision and has now become the world model for global sustainable development. The EU will continue to be a pioneer in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, together with its Member States, in full respect of the principle of subsidiarity. Europeans rank climate change as one of the most serious problems facing the world, today. The education and training sectors, like all sectors, must take action to respond to this planetary crisis. In June 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted a Recommendation on learning for ecological transition and sustainable development. This statement sets out how sustainability can be integrated into all aspects of education and training, and among these highlights the importance of providing opportunities for all students to learn about the climate crisis and sustainability as part of their formal education, but also from non-formal education. For this reason and after the success of the previous projects on sustainability, our desire to continue focusing on different sustainability challenges together with the youth of the previous projects, leaders and participants, we decided to focus, this time, on the Zero Waste movement. On a broader spectrum, in Europe we currently use 16 tons of materials per person per year, of which 6 tons become waste. In terms of household waste alone, each person in Europe currently produces, on average, half a tonne of such waste. Only 40% is reused or recycled, and in some countries more than 80% still goes to landfill (source: Environmental Data Center for Waste, Eurostat). Minimizing waste, not generating it and turning it into waste is one of the keys to a circular economy. In Spain, the recycling rate is around 36%, while in the EU it is 47%. Most of our waste ends up in landfills. We want to develop a youth exchange to exchange ideas on how to minimize waste in practice, exchange solutions in everyday life and learn how to waste as little as possible and inspire our communities, cities and people around us. Zero Waste has sought to address sustainability through the following objectives: - To raise awareness about the Zero Waste movement (which is based on the 5 Rs: reduce, reuse, repair, recover and recycle) and the circular economy; - To support a zero waste lifestyle and exchange ideas on how to minimize waste, how to reduce it, reuse it, recycle it, etc.; - To support participants to take action and become Zero Wasters; - To try to minimize residues in practice for 10 days; - The 32 participants can develop new skills and competences through non-formal and informal learning: creative workshops, workshops, open debates and visits; - The 32 participants can develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to be agents of change in our daily lives and in our communities; - The 5 groups can create workshops, role plays or any creative presentation of one of the 5 Rs; - The 5 associated organizations can exchange knowledge about sustainable lifestyles and without waste; - To support participants, including those with fewer opportunities, in the acquisition of competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes), with a view to zero waste in practice and promote the Zero Waste movement in their communities; - To promote active participation and increase awareness of zero waste in practice, through outdoor activities in the area; - To improve the self-empowerment of the participants and insert the idea of long-term vision and sustainability as proposed by the EU and the Sustainable Development Goals. Contribute, for example, to SDG 11 for sustainable cities and communities, SDG 12 for sustainable consumption and production, SDG 13 to combat climate change and other goals related to the environment and sustainable development; - To raise awareness about Erasmus+ among participants and the local community and improve the use of YouthPass as a tool for reflection and learning; - To support the local community of Pontevedra and disseminate the results of the program in the community.
