Objectives

Through the project we wanted to find and improve new procedures for the new comprehensive school. We hoped to receive new ideas and practices how to improve our school community and working culture. The aim was to make the key areas visible to all people working and studying in the Jääli Community Center. We wanted to gain new teaching methods and learning environments. Furthermore an objective was to learn how to utilize digitalization in learning and teaching. We need means to deal with and prevent exhaustion of students. By implementing the project we aimed to enhance well-being and wellness education. It's essential to know how you can calm down and release stress in a constructive way. We are interested in how these topics come up in Europe in general. Furthermore we wanted to increase international contacts and cultural knowledge in our school.

Background

Jääli School is a comprehensive school located in the community center in Jääli; two schools, Laivakangas School (grades 5-9) and the old Jääli School (grades 1-4 and special needs classes) were combined into one in 2019. The key areas of our school are developing the curriculum and pedagogy, developing learning support, mastering digitalization and reinforcing well-being. Improving our new comprehensive school and the working culture has required a lot of work, which has concerned the whole school community. The number of Jääli school stuff is 80. New open learning spaces require joint teaching skills. Combining two school cultures hasn't been easy. In the school community we focus on support for well-being and stress management of children and adults. A health survey, executed every other year in Finland, reveals student exhaustion as a weighty phenomenon. New learning environments, large learning groups and demands of the curriculum burden the school community. We need tools to enhance overall well-being at school. A hectic everyday life in a big school challenges both children and adults.
