Objectives

The project aimed to strengthen KAMU Espoo City Museum as a truly audience centered actor and to develop the museum’s staff competences regarding participation and inclusion. In particular, the project investigated ways which would help increase participation of young adults and adults with an immigrant background. The project explored good practices and participatory programs, projects and museum concepts in Europe. To develop pedagogically high quality, inclusive and genuinely learner-centered programs, the project aimed at increasing project and design skills and teamwork. Through the mobilities, the museum also hoped to build a European network of museums and increase staff’s language and cultural skills.

Background

KAMU Espoo City Museum’s mission is to increase the well-being of people and strengthen local identities by working together with citizens to produce information, experiences and agency relating to Espoo’s cultural heritage. The museum is also responsible for preserving the regional cultural environment. KAMU Espoo City Museum is aiming to be a museum for everyone in Espoo that speaks about the past in multiple voices, is active in the present and creates a more sustainable future together with the residents. A large-scale internal and external renewal process started in 2017, and the Erasmus+ project was developed to gain and develop new competences needed in pursuing its mission.
