We here at Villa Elba, as well as many players in our various networks, have found that it is harder nowadays to find longer term volunteers. In our experience, young people rarely want to get involved in a project for a year, often they only apply for a few months. This is an unfortunate trend, especially since there are again many volunteers in our area who would like to receive volunteers specifically for long-term projects. For many years, Villa Elba has worked with municipalities and organizations in our area to encourage and assist them in international projects, and with the experience of volunteering, many players are now willing to develop their activities and become more confident in getting projects and volunteering. We think that this problem, where the needs of the volunteers and the host organizations do not meet, is a deplorable situation. We have also been thinking about how to market host projects so that we can clearly highlight how participation can affect the volunteer himself or herself. We have also, for many years, been discussing in our networks the idea of organizing a seminar where former volunteers would meet and send. Does our work really matter, what has worked well and what could we have done differently? Does volunteering really matter? In the busy project world we often do not have enough time to stop at our own work, but evaluating our own work and measuring its effectiveness is important and often comes up in different contexts.
