Objectives

The main goal of our project was to bring the topic of “mental health” to the attention of young people. The moment when we started to discuss (among the two partners) about this idea, was before Covid. Even then, we felt that young people were going through a generalised hard period, which was caused especially by Social Media - which tended to make it easier to bully and to alienate people. As the pandemic hit, the theme of our project became even more important - but things were harder to implement. We were forced to postpone the implementation two times - and we were unsure until the very last moment if we would be able to make it happen. In the same time with the pandemic, our interest in this project grew. We were lucky enough to have chosen a very “fit” theme, and we were looking forward to discussing and doing activities on the topic of mental health. We still believe this is a very actual and important topic, and more should be done in this regard. By implementing this project, we hoped to bring the topic of mental health closer to the young people we are working with. We wanted to achieve a higher level of understanding and we wanted to develop their empathy for one another, as a first step towards taking care of ours and others mental health. The title of our project was “Sawubona” - which is a Zulu greeting meaning “I see you, you are important to me and I value you”. We believe this was a very adequate title, and it is a word which has entered our vocabulary, due to the project. The objectives of our project were: - to make the participants understand that mental health is an essential aspect of life and that we all need to ensure and preserve it for ourselves in order to lead a normal, healthy life - to make the participants empathise with each other - to stimulate young people's participation in youth events and international initiatives - to work for the development of participants' skills, knowledge and their individual self-development As part of the European perspective we aimed to: Promote a sense of awareness about mental health, understanding among different cultures and perspectives, working together, and fighting for a better environment - seen as European values Involve young people from two completely different European countries, who will gain key competencies that will allow them to become active citizens of their community, and also teach them about mental health and intercultural dialogue.
