Objectives

The "international school" label requires that the school as a whole offer an openness to the world and language learning from kindergarten on. This criterion requires a commitment to promote language learning during school and extracurricular activities, and to encourage linguistic discovery and deepening. The first objective of the project was to improve the language skills of the teachers, especially the kindergarten teacher who had not participated in the first mobility projects, in order to offer quality teaching from the GST. The second objective was to continue this cultural opening in order to transmit it to the pupils but also to encourage the reception of people, their ideas and their cultures to better welcome the allophone pupils. Indeed, the Saint Joseph de la Moussaye school wanted to be recognized for this specificity, by giving meaning to the international opening of its establishment by articulating the various initiatives taken in this field and by referring them to its school project. Finally, the last objective was to improve and develop the skills of the teachers in the digital domain.

Background

The Saint Joseph de la Moussaye school is located in the historic district in the center of Fougères, a medium-sized town of 20,000 inhabitants in Ille et Vilaine. The school has 230 students divided into 9 classes (3 kindergartens, 6 primary). The educational team is composed of 10 teachers and 8 OGEC staff. The school also welcomes students with disabilities as well as students in ULIS classes. Saint Joseph de la Moussaye is the only Catholic school in the Fougères region to offer a bilingual section (English and German from CE1). The international opening and the learning of languages has then become a priority axis within the school . In 2018, the teaching team embarked on an ERASMUS project in Scotland but also in Ireland in 2019 in order to strengthen its language skills. Real impacts have been observed on the life of the school with the implementation of projects. Physical education and sports are taught in English from CP to CM2. The teachers have chosen an international learning method common to their school: the KIDS'BOX method for classes from GS to CM2. In addition, several classes correspond with an English school and a school in Madagascar. During a school council meeting, the educational community decided to pursue this opening, to guarantee a quality education and to wish that the school be officially recognized for this specificity. The school has therefore submitted an application for the "international school" label.
