Objectives

1. Train adults in the pilot sites in sustainable and shared territorial planning, using the SMILO methodology 2. Strengthen the technical skills of adults in the pilot sites on the SMILO themes: water, waste, energy, biodiversity and landscapes 3. Strengthen the skills and knowledge of the SMILO Secretariat in the 5 themes through the discovery on the field of good practices of the project islands 4. Strengthen the capacity of SMILO to lead the islands in the certification process towards integrated approaches for the sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of biodiversity responding to local issues. 5. Add more good practices to the SMILO “Bank of Initiatives” platform, dedicated to promoting and disseminating good practices, suited to island environments and reproducible on other territorial scales. 6. Sustain the activities of SMILO, structure and lead the international network, which brings together managers of small islands around the world and technical and institutional partners, in order to encourage operational exchanges and transfer knowledge.

Background

Small islands have to face common challenges (the richness and fragility of their natural heritage, pressures, limited resources, variation of seasonal flows, etc.). Island managers have to deal with relative isolation, which limits their ability to implement concrete sustainable development measures adapted to their constraints. Support and dialogue between territories with the same problems, but also capable of finding answers to environmental challenges, should be facilitated. The general objective of the project was thus to respond to needs of island managers, to encourage and promote approaches to the preservation and sustainable management of natural resources, in a logic of strengthening cooperation and solidarity between islands, in Europe and beyond. This support was given through 1) the involvement of 5 pilot sites (Brownsea, UK; Culatra and Corvo, Portugal; Sifnos, Greece; Kihnu, Estonia) in the SMILO certification process which aims to help local stakeholders achieve sustainable territorial planning around a shared governance, and 2) their participation in SMILO international network.
