Project summary

FABAS (Fighting Against Bullying at School) is a strategic partnership, ‘school education’, organized by the Regional Council of Pays de la Loire, that aims to start a reflexion on tools and methods to fight efficiently bullying in schools. Indeed, bullying is a reality in every country, every school all over the world, with truly harmful consequences on the physical and mental health of bullied pupils. This project proposes to provide answers at the European level to the school staff, the trainers and pupils involved in the improvement of school climate. The first exchanges between the project partners, spread over five EU countries (Spain, Italy, Lithuania, Belgium and France) highlighted different working methods to effectively combat bullying. Indeed, each of the eleven project partners, namely : six school establishments, an association, Progetto Crescere Cooperazione, the Kaunas teacher training centre, the Regional Council of Pays de la Loire (local authority) and the Rectorat of the Academy of Nantes and the Liège Province, each have their own methods. Pooling their strategies, tools and protocols will make it possible to develop a collective response to fighting bullying that can be disseminated and tested in their respective territories. To this end, three areas of work will be addressed : prevention, detection and resolution of cases of bullying. The project has therefore three objectives : - To improve the detection of bullying cases through to the creation of a reading grid and an indicator directory, following an inventory of the situation between each partner. - To draw up a draft common protocol within each establishment that is shared between the various players and is based on a catalogue of good practices studied during the project - To improve the resolution of bullying cases by the creation of a tool worksheet dedicated to solving the bullying cases. Different types of learning and training activities will be implemented to meet up these objectives: activities and workshop will be set up within the structures in the framework of the project, including the different actors (school staff and pupils) upstream, during and downstream of the training mobilities. This will allow to discover, test, and deepen protocols and tools shared during mobilities among the different European partners. This project will give a central place to pupils who are the main actors in bullying situation at school. In conclusion, this project aims to deepen and develop new protocols and tools that are transferable and that allow each pupil to follow a successful schooling in a serene school climate.

Objectives

As a lead partner, we wanted to create a strong dynamic between the project partners to allow for fluid, constructive and useful exchanges on the issue of bullying in schools. We also wanted the partners to be actors in the project and autonomous in certain tasks. Each partner had at least the responsibility of organising a mobility and ensuring its animation, with our support if necessary. We also wanted to create a common culture among the partners on this subject. This took the form of team building workshops, discussions on deliverables, open forums to try to follow up on this project, which the Regional Council was leading. The synthesis of the project and these reflections has been developed into a digital resource kit containing a detailed presentation of the project, an anti-harassment guide, case studies podcasts and materials from all beneficiary countries: https://fabasproject.wixsite.com/fabas-project. We encouraged the transfer of some experiences to other beneficiaries' environments.

Background

Bullying in schools is a problem of concern for the health of pupils and affects all countries of Europe and the world. The Pays de la Loire Region implements the so-called “Lighter Educational Actions” enabling high schools in particular to implement activities in the fight against bullying in schools. The Pays de la Loire Region has therefore set up a European consortium, as a leader, with schools, training centres and representatives of the Ministry of Education, in order to have a plurality of educational actors involved in the fight against bullying and thus offer more relevant tools and methods to educational actors. The needs addressed in our project sheet were: - The need to understand the perception of bullying in schools and the regulatory context in other European countries in order to learn from their experiences and compare methods; - Evaluation of the possible transfer of the various experiences encountered in different environments and contexts, even within the same country; - The sustainability of exchanges between partners beyond this project.
