Background

Arab Spring that has started in 2012, has caused civil wars in North Africa and Middle East countries. Thousands of people left their countries, took shelter in European countries, and became refugees and migrants as a result of these civil wars. The refugee problem has become visible in public when thousands of asylum-seekers crossed the boundaries of Europe. European public started to have troubles with accepting refugees, and an increase in the amount of offensive and racist discourses against refugees has been observed which stems from mass immigration. Public institutions and actors are not able to change this negative perception of Europe’s public against refugees and migrants on their own. Support of civil society dialog and NGOs played an important role in changing this negative perception. ARTREF project became a step to turn the negative perception of European people into a positive one. Fields of studies of project partners are refugees, asylum-seekers, and immigrants. The ARTREF project showed through artist refugees that, refugees became beneficial individuals for the society they are living in, and provided additional value to the countries’ cultures. Awareness was created in Europe. International cooperation of different cultures was made.
