Project summary

In our two schools, some of the pupils come from economically disadvantaged families who rarely had the opportunity to travel and it has become clear to us that it is more and more difficult to arouse interest, engagement and work. This is the reason why our two schools show the same will to : 1 – reduce social and cultural inequalities, 2- increase awareness of our young pupils to European citizenship by developing their language practice by enabling them to discover new ways of life (during school trips abroad) and to acquire an European culture, 3- offer study pathways which take into account the differences and offer educational differentiated methods according to the needs of all. We are facing pupils who have increasingly educational difficulties, or even school failures. In front of this reality, games can be a tool to motivate them, to help them acquiring new notions but also to enable them to develop a social dimension in favour of sharing and being in contact with other people. Indeed, they are going to interact with each other which can be a factor of social inclusion. Thanks to gamification, we hope that pupils will be more motivated and engaged in the learning process. This is a unique opportunity for us to arouse their motivation through a project in which they will be actors with the realisation of a concrete product. We would like to give 10 French pupils and 10 Spanish pupils to work together in Franco-Spanish teams to make games to help them learn in class but also games on awareness and prevention (environment, harassment, dangers on the internet ...). The produced games will be edited in different copies for each school so that all pupils can play with them. These games could be tools : - useful in class to motivate them and to help them memorise new notions – during activities offered to primary school children for transition days – during board games lunchtime workshops on Tuesdays – during the European week – offered to the residents from the retirement home of the Hospital in La Guerche with which we have close ties and the Apadis association which promotes inclusion intellectually impaired people in Villena. At the end of this project, a contest between all these games will be done. The winner could be offered locally in the experimentation shop of the Lycée St Exupéry. We would also like to work in collaboration with the association ‘L’Outil en main” to produce (probably) eco-responsible packaging with them (for example sachets with pieces of fabric or by recycling paper or cardboard or pieces of wood.) The aims of this project are: - To motivate and to stimulate these pupils who do not always find motivation in the school system. - To develop their creativity - To encourage respect and tolerance towards other European cultures - To discover the aspects of the culture and the heritage of each country through games - To reinforce European identity through education and culture - To upgrade teaching and learning methods to motivate pupils (real mobility so that pupils can be in contact with native speakers). First of all, to help Franco-Spanish partners, we are going to ask them to embrace challenges to get to know each other, know each other’s country, and know more about Europe. For the implementation of this project: from September to February, they ought to create games linked to courses. 1st mobility: Presentation of French Games in a Spanish primary school, to present games to other groups, to produce together (French and Spanish) awareness games. 2nd mobility: Workshop from ‘La Maison de l’Europe’. Presentation of Spanish games in a French primary school. Game night with families. Production of other awareness games. The result of this project will be the completed games which could be used within schools at any time by teachers and pupils. We hope we will arouse motivation in pupils and creativity thanks to this project being actors and also to enable them to stay in their penfriend’s family so that they become aware of the importance of mastering different languages. The participation in this concrete project will allow our two schools to reinforce their links with primary schools and local partners. .

Final report summary

In our 2 establishments, some of the students come from economically disadvantaged families who rarely have the opportunity to travel, especially after these 2 years strongly impacted by COVID.we realize day after day that it has become quite hard to motivate and engage these students in a projet. The objective of our project was therefore to offer, not to 10 students as initially planned, but 30 French and 30 Spanish students the opportunity to participate in a European project by offering them the opportunity to exchange with a young Spanish or French of their age and to work jointly on the creation of games linked to Europe. We found it very unfortunate indeed to allow only about ten students to participate in this project when they were very numerous to show interest when this project was presented. Although this was more restrictive, cumbersome and complicated for us teachers, we made this choice to offer this chance to a greater number of students. Offering them a project in which they were actors with the concrete realization of a game was a way for us to arouse their motivation. Objectives of the project: Create board games on Europe while working with their Spanish correspondents, use the language they study to exchange with each other. Get to know Europe better. Develop their creativity, work in collaboration. Promote respect towards other European cultures and tolerance. Discover aspects of the culture and heritage of another European country. Strengthen European identity. We managed to complete this project, although it took us 2 years and not 1 year due to COVID. During the 1st year, the young French and Spanish people selected for this project were able to send each other a first letter in order to get to know each other, then very quickly we offered them to exchange by videoconference so that they could get to know each other better. Then the students worked on the idiomatic expressions specific to each language (French and Spanish). Each French student had to perform in order to illustrate a Spanish idiomatic expression and each Spanish student did the same with French idiomatic expressions. Playful games on Wordwall were then made from the photos of these illustrations in order to make these idiomatic expressions known. Then, each student had to use their artistic talents to create the logo for this project. Among the fundamental values of the European Union is the defense of the rights of all human beings, it is therefore to defend these rights that the Spanish high school mobilized on March 8, 2021 by making an exhibition on portraits of women. The students also made videos about some famous women and sang the song "Because I'm a girl". In March 2021, we had to resolve not to travel due to the health situation which prevented us from doing so, which is why we decided to make videos for our correspondents who could not come in order to to discover the favorite places of our country. During the 2nd year, after the formation of pairs and the exchange of the 1st letters, the students made their Chinese portrait and then had to answer a questionnaire to find out if they knew all the correspondents well. A video was added to this presentation so that the 60 young participants in this project know each other as much as possible. This being done, the work on the creation itself could really begin with the distribution of the students by groups (3 French and their 3 Spanish correspondents). This was followed by discussions by videoconference in groups of 6 to determine the game they were going to create. During the 1st mobility, they were able to finalize their thinking and start making their games. The 2nd mobility allowed them to finalize and finish their games. These games were then presented to families who took to the game and had a good time playing around the theme of Europe. Some students then went to animate workshops-games in CM2 classes and at the retirement home. During these workshops, the games really made it possible to memorize a lot of information about the EU such as a few words in several languages, the capitals, some monuments, the flags... The result of this project is a box with many games that we can use in class in our 2 establishments, during game workshops, during integration days for future 6th or 1ESO students. The primary school teachers to whom we presented the games have already reserved these games because they want to use them in class since the workshops presented at the end of the year made them want to work on the theme of Europe next year.
