Objectives

In the face of an ecological crisis and increasing social and economic inequality, recent academic research has stressed the importance of addressing the Commons. Numerous studies are calling for a drastic change in the way they are governed and managed if we want our societies to get more sustainable (thus including social equity, economic viability and ecological durability). Those studies keep pointing out the great potential citizens and civil society organizations have to get organized collectively and implement efficient, fair and sustainable strategies, alongside State and Market regulations. Few people actually know about the very practical examples those studies are based on, thus the people who implemented those initiatives rarely get a chance to share their experiences. This prevents civil society actors – and especially young people – to take inspiration from them in their actions, which in turn affects their ability to collectively address the current social and ecological issues our societies are facing. The DARE THE COMMONS! seminar was an opportunity to have an insight into those initiatives and share the knowledge, know-how and soft skills required to undertake them so that participants can regain a sense of collective agency, gain confidence in their ability to take action, and get actively involved in favor of protecting, governing and managing the Commons through projects of social and environmental benefit. Therefore they can also transmit this enthusiasm and confidence to the people around them. To do so, we trained 30 youth and social workers from 7 EU countries, so that they could share the information they had received with the people they support or work with (the majority of whom are young people, young project leaders and civil society organisations) and apply what they had learnt in the projects they run. First, the seminar allowed the participants to have a clear definition of the concept of “Commons” and to understand and analyze the difficulties that our current behaviours generate in their governance and management. It then allowed them to explore the factors that facilitate collective action, to specify the pitfalls that threaten it, to work on their posture and to acquire new methods and tools to overcome the main difficulties they had identified. Finally, the seminar was an opportunity for the participants to share their experiences and to get inspired by several examples of successful Commons management throughout Europe, which they can disseminate to their target audience and use in their next activities. Consequently, the DARE THE COMMONS! seminar helped the participants to improve the quality of awareness and educational activities regarding environmental issues, citizenship and social entrepreneurship led by youth and social organizations. It also encouraged them to enrich the information, the training courses and the supportive services they offer to young people, social entrepreneurs and civil society organizations who would like to take action for a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable society. The seminar allowed the participants to have a new way of understanding the management of the common resources in different venues and contributed to instilling a new dynamic of cooperation within their collectives, that encourages a greater participation of the civil society in collective projects of social and environmental utility.
