Objectives

By implementing this project, we wanted to tackle a problem that we identified that we had in common with our partners: the lack of tolerance and acceptance of cultures. The idea of having this project was given by our Youth Workers in view of the current European migration crisis, which brought an increase in intolerance and racial discrimination in Europe. Our aim through this project was to identify common causes of intolerance and to analyze persistent cases of it based on culture, religion, religion, gender, sexual identity, and racism against various minorities, to formulate good practices to reduce it, as well as strategies that could help to increase tolerance towards minorities in participating countries and beyond. This project was the creation of a common effort as the application was written together with our partners and our youth teams and its main key element was the need to support the youngsters who are socially excluded from active participation in activities in their communities because of a barrier (social, economic, geographical, cultural or health) and face the fear of discrimination and marginalization. Our goal was through this project to break stereotypes and prejudices, embrace understanding, empathy, and acceptance, and empower diversity, inclusion, and equity. Along with participants and partners from 6 different countries, we wanted through non-formal and informal education to give participants the opportunity to change the way they perceive others who are different in their appearance and behavior; to become more tolerant of others, and act as catalysts for change in the communities they live and be more actively involved in these communities. Moreover, we wanted to empower these youngsters to be able to use the media tools much more effectively and improve their skills for future awareness campaigns, promotional information, and opportunities for dialogue and employment in related sectors. Since we had participants with different cultural backgrounds, our priority was to create a safe learning environment, where they could without fear express themselves, share ideas and points of view, learn from each other, and all together discover the best ways to combat these phenomena of disinformation and discrimination. To achieve all the above, we used different kinds of interactive methods and approaches, based on non-formal education tools such as teamwork, brainstorming, media creation workshops, debates, and of course reflection and evaluation. In this way, participants learnt how to be open-minded, how to be tolerant and accept diversity, and how to behave in conflict situations, especially in multi-ethnic/ multicultural communities. The objectives of the project were the following: - Raising awareness of European citizenship among young people from minorities (cultural, ethnic, etc.). - Empowering young people to play an active role in local communities. - Bringing together young people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and raising awareness of the different realities that surround us. - Creating a space for dialogue. - Fostering the sense of sharing common values. - Raising the sense of belonging to Europe and the world in general. At the same time, the project contributed: • to raise participants’ awareness of personal and cultural identity and its importance. • to develop participants’ empathy, critical thinking, and communication skills. • to create an inclusive and safe learning environment for participants, supporting their personal and professional development. • to provide the space and time for participants to develop actions that were combating discrimination and promoting and empowering tolerance, inclusion, and appreciation of diversity. • to enable and promote among participants the usage of media as a tool for education, communication, combating exclusion, and standing up for human rights. • to increase participants’ self-empowerment and self-esteem. Through these objectives, we aimed to empower and equip with the necessary skills and competences youngsters from France, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia, Poland and Romania enabling them to: • speak up for and support the rights of minorities by using media as a tool • be more aware of disinformation, discrimination, and prejudices in their everyday life, the local community, and the society they live in, and be able to take initiatives to tackle it and even better, prevent it • learn to accept diversity, be empathetic and open-minded, and better understand other youth groups in their community, especially youngsters belonging to minority groups (e.g., refugees, migrants, LGBTQ2+, etc.) or youngsters with fewer opportunities in general (coming from rural areas, facing economic and social/ cultural obstacles, etc.) • become promoters and multipliers after this experience of tolerance, empathy, understanding, intercultural dialogue, and human rights.
