Objectives

We wanted to improve teachers' professional competencies, improve the work of the Bilingual Program and improve the generic competencies of both teachers and students. We planned to emphasize teaching skills and techniques of student work organization, setting rules, constructive use of time spent at work, successful organization of learning, encouraging student involvement in teaching process, recognizing and respecting students' needs, as well as developing their social and emotional skills. We wanted to raise the quality of teaching to establish high-quality work methods, which until now have been carried out periodically according to the teacher's choice. The goal was to create training through 7 modules, including topics like emotions, motivation, communication, stress, working with students with special needs, prevention of peer violence, physical activity, and relaxation. We intended to create a Classroom Management Manual that would cover the mentioned topics, and that would be a protocol that teachers will act according to. The plan was to establish class rules with the students. To monitor the achievement of the goals, we intended to create a questionnaire on the assessment of management skills for teachers and students.

Background

After conducting the Questionnaire for teachers Questionnaire for students within the NCVVO project External evaluation of elementary schools and high schools: Pilot project 2018, we received guidelines about the areas in which we can improve our work. The quality team (11 teachers, 1 student and 1 parent) identified the topic of classroom management as one of the priorities. It's also included in the School's Development Plan (Appendix 1). We wanted to increase teachers' awareness of the importance of the topic of successful classroom management, show readiness for change, innovation, openness to cooperation, desire to gain new experiences, encourage them to approach the problem in multiple ways, accept differences, use their knowledge for the purpose of enrichment and improvement of the work of the School and the community. We started from an assumption that effective teaching and learning can't take place in poorly managed classrooms. Therefore we designed a project through which teachers would have the opportunity to improve their classroom management skills, learn about new teaching methods and tools that would help them create an atmosphere of respect where students feel safe, comfortable and involved in the teaching process.
