Objectives

With the implementation of the project, we wanted to: - learn new tools and methods for croatian language courses that are carried out as part of the process of integration into the new society - improve access to teachers and facilitators participating in the process of educating people with fewer opportunities (especially with a migrant background) - develop communication and intercultural skills for people working with migrants - improve the work techniques in heterogeneous classrooms and different abilities - identify risk factors and different types of barriers, cultural biases, stereotypes and prejudices and propose solutions - gain a broader understanding of strategies and systems that deal with multicultural issues - get acquainted with examples of good practice in order to transfer them to regular work We wanted to adopt new teaching styles, new methods of work and skills related to work with marginalized people in order to help them develop and achieve their potential. At the same time, we wanted to empower teachers who work with different cultures and background to recognize potential dangers and risks, which affect the learning and teaching process.

Background

Case study of the Craft College showed that the challenges we are faced in working with adult participants with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds (especially working with asylum seekers and migrants in a multicultural environment) are stressful for the staff. The reasons are lack of skills and knowledge to identify obstacles and risks and respond to them. The faster and successful integration of marginalized persons (migrants) into Croatian society requires the improvement of their emotional intelligence. It was necessary to strengthen knowledge and skills of the staff, to adopt new methods of work in order to enable the development of key competences of our students; linguistic, information, civic, financial and digital literacy. We live in a society that is diverse and unequal, and in order to promote European values such as social equality, human rights, democracy, tolerance, it is necessary to create an enabling environment for staff to work and for leaners to learn. We have to promote cooperation, to appreciate and use diversity to effectively manage them and to develop new ideas and to encourage adults to engage in various educational activities (formal, non-formal and informal).
