Objectives

Young people with fewer opportunities, especially young people with disabilities, face numerous challenges in their everyday lives such as inequality of chances, systemic barriers, negative attitudes and social exclusion. They often experience rejection due to peers’ misconceptions or prejudices. Ignorance and misinformation about disability itself may contribute to feelings of isolation from peers. Council of Europe in its Disability Action Plan emphasises that many young people experience clearly discriminatory situations where they are quite simply excluded from participation in activities. Youngsters with disabilities are the young people who are in greatest need of support, back-up and special attention if they are to find their way in society. Action Plan also suggests that in order to promote their participation, it is vital to highlight the potential of young people with disabilities, promote an open and welcoming environment and help them find their place in the various fields of social life. The emphasis must be on developing their autonomy, and particularly on reinforcing their self-confidence and self-esteem through sports and recreational activities. Sports can reduce the stigmatisation process and negative stereotypes. It can also contribute to improving social status: non-disabled people see physically active individuals with disabilities more favourably than non-active people. Social benefits as the nature of many sport activities leads to increased social integration, bonding and friendship. This project gathers partners that work with young people with fewer opportunities and disabilities, who developed the idea based on experiences, needs and ideas of their target groups, among which the need for development of social competences and enhanced social inclusion are the most prominent ones. In line with identified needs, the main aim of this project is to enhance social inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, especially young people with a disability, by developing their interpersonal and intrapersonal competences through sport as the main method. Project objectives are: to develop intrapersonal skills of the participants through practicing sports (self-awareness and expression, empowerment, self-confidence) to develop interpersonal skills of the participants through practicing sports (communication, teamwork, leadership, conflict resolution) to increase social inclusion of participants through interaction with their peers; to encourage breaking prejudices to develop their intercultural awareness and sense of common European identity to develop their foreign language competences to promote Erasmus+ and opportunities for education and mobility of youth.
