Project Youth United in Peace Exchange – YUP 2020 brought together 56 young people, different in terms of ethnicity, nationality, religion, age and gender. They came from divided cities such as Vukovar, Srebrenica and Gornji Vakuf - Uskoplje and cities known for their interculturality - Tuzla and Sombor. Through the seven-day youth exchange, through targeted workshops, young people saw how much more unites them than separates them, how to deal with the burden of the past, manipulations by the media and politicians, and looked back and analyzed the different views that people have on the war events of the 1990s. years, with the aim of building a more tolerant society. The participants broadened their horizons and practiced thinking critically, creating personal attitudes while respecting others, their attitudes as well as the culture they come from. Young people actually learned to think about history in a different way and learned how they can become active fellow citizens who work for changes in their local communities. Young people need to understand the past in order to continue building a better future. By participating in the project, they showed their desire and initiative for change in society. Through informal learning as well as a purposefully designed cultural and entertainment program, they saw numerous similarities and interests shared by all young people. In addition, dialogues were initiated and connections between young people were established, which are necessary to maintain lasting peace in the Balkans. Young people left the project with friendships that know no borders. Building trust, understanding, tolerance and spreading the message of peace is an idea that ran through all the youth exchange activities.
