Objectives

In various regions of the European Union, there is a noticeable lack of democratic participation, especially among the younger population, who, by not participating, do not exercise their right to participate in the democratic processes that shape their future. These young people would benefit greatly from being receptive to the social sensibility and democratic principles that are in decline in some parts of Europe. Our training aimed to equip youth workers with effective strategies to engage these young people. By participating in Slam Poetry and using expression, we can promote the increased awareness and sensitivity of young people to democratic and social values, thereby encouraging young people to participate more in the creation of a more democratic Europe. Young people often find it difficult to express their emotions, which makes them less involved in discussing social and societal issues. The ever-growing popularity of the Slam Poetry movement also reinforces a particular mode of communication that deeply connects with the younger generation and can be used to promote enthusiasm for social and democratic values by encouraging active engagement and self-reflection. During the project, our objective was to enable youth workers to create a common platform with the help of slam poetry, which enables effective communication and cooperation with young people. This platform, consisting of a common attitude, learning environment and acquired tools, is suitable for promoting the active European citizenship of young people. According to the goal of the project, during the training, the youth workers acquired the tools and methods to transfer this knowledge to the young people they work with. During the training another of our aim was that the participating youth workers recognize the value of slam poetry in education. The training followed a methodological framework focused on non-formal methods, as a result of which the participants learned the methods of using slam poetry to enhance democratic participation and expand their professional toolbox. Through informal and non-formal approaches, including gamification and practical artistic self-expression, the toolbox of youth workers has thus been expanded with methods that can help to establish contact with young people in cases where a more traditional approach does not lead to results. We also aimed that with an artistic approach to self-expression, the youth workers significantly increase their own and their target audience's democratic participation and draw attention to the importance of democratic values, thus the project increases the number of young people who actively participate in social debates and represent European values. The project also aimed to increase European mobility, intercultural and social sensitivity, which are among the goals of the Erasmus+ program.
