Nowadays we are facing several global challenges and environmental issues. Sustainable development are among the biggest challenges of the 21st century, and the solution is waiting for our generation and young people - especially those who are working with other young people. These issues are affecting our lives on a daily basis and many times young people get lost in what could be done since the problems seem so big. Young people and youth workers working with them need to be clear with the theme of ‘sustainability’ and be able to transmit the message also for others since good practices and innovative solutions can influence our daily life in a positive way. In our project we aim to break into parts of the topic of sustainability - learn about its economic, environmental and social aspects - and see the responsibility of the individual in the system - how can one take better care about their surroundings and the environment. We also want to show how they can promote their ideas and invite more people to join them in making their first steps towards a more sustainable life. We approach the topic of sustainability in a very practical way - we want to show that learning about environmental issues and recycling can be a lot of joy, while also a creation process happens which shows result and brings the message closer to other people. We use the method of ‘creative recycling’ combined with different non formal educational elements and media - where we create objects out of waste materials which can be used in every household. We work with plastic, paper, textile, tetrapak, etc. - these materials are available for everyone, regardless of their background and status. Therefore in this project we especially target young people who are coming from disadvantages circumstances or who are living with mental/physical disabilities. We also would like to involve youth workers who are working with such target groups since according to our experience, it can be a great tool for them which they can present to youngsters they are working with while also making their jobs more creative and sustainable. Since our methods are based on easy-to learn techniques and are available for everyone, no one can be excluded from the creation process. Working and creating together in an integrated group brings all the participants to a new level of acceptance - they learn to listen, to communicate in an effective way, they develop social skills and get a whole new perspective on how to look at differences. We believe that innovation happens when people and organisations start to connect and share their knowledge. In our experience, creating together is a new and unusual way of connecting, because during creation we open up in a different way, while our brain is focusing also on the process itself. The fact that we create something completely new out of waste materials gives us the chance to look at creativity and design thinking in a holistic way where recycling does not only mean creating an object but also the re-discovery and re-usage of our own resources, senses and skills to connect in a real context. Involving media elements in this process further supports the promotion of such activities and the topic of sustainability itself while also adding extra space for creativity. Our main objectives are: - To promote inclusion, creativity and ‘network thinking’ in general among youth people and in youth work by using the method of creative recycling - To equip youth workers in the method of creative recycling to be able to react on environmental issues in an innovative way - Enabling youth workers to transfer the newly learnt methods in their every day work life and empower them to create new, innovative methods and activities - To equip youth workers and youngsters to promote their ideas and the topic of sustainability by learning about different media tools and practicing their usage - To include young people with special needs in the sustainable lifestyle and support their first steps, improve their creativity and sense of initiative - To empower young people to become active citizens, through sharing critical knowledge and understanding of sustainable way of living.
