Objectives

In the implementation of this project it was envisaged that participants would complete a more challenging learning experience leading to the acquisition of new skills in a less familiar work environment. This would, in turn, aid the development of their social and interpersonal skills alongside their career and vocational development. Experiencing different cultural approaches to work was hoped to play a part in positively influencing their work ethic and enhancing their employability following graduation. Exposure of learners, from rural disadvantaged areas with little opportunity to travel, to various cultures would serve to improve cultural awareness generally dispelling cultural stereotypes and helping them identify better as European citizens. With a greater number of participants, natural dissemination would be improved by word of mouth alongside other established methods of dissemination. In short, the aim was to provide education and training in specific vocational areas through or college and have this leaning enhanced in a European context.

Background

The project was applied for to offer almost 25% of our increased student population the opportunity to participate, building on previous years' involvement and introducing opportunity to those from a socio-economically disadvantaged region. Extra funding was sought to cover an increased enrolment brought about by the amalgamation of the college with a second college under the new title of Mayo College of Further Education and Training. The benefits afforded to past students was such that it spurred the development of the college to this level and it was imperative that this character building and vocational opportunity would be available to a greater number year on year. This application sought to nurture current partnerships and develop new and relevant partnerships that would add value to the vocational, educational and personal development of our staff and learners. The inclusion of the Erasmus+ project in our provision also serves to expand our catchment in terms of enrolment as has been evidenced year on year in student feedback and enrolment figures as well as recognition from the governing body MSLETB which sought to introduce the projects through amalgamation to all Further education provision.
