Objectives

Rural young people tend to be more marginalised than their urban counterparts. In Ireland, this is reinforced by lower level of literacy in rural areas, lower level of higher education attainment, lower levels of computer literacy, significantly reduced access to broadband and public transport services and considerably less access to mental health services. As Ireland's connection to rural young people, Macra na Feirme has a vision for rural communities that are vibrant, dynamic and inclusive. This vision can be helped along through providing opportunities for young people to learn and develop through intercultural activity and meaningful connections. This training course was developed by the Macra na Feirme rural youth committee along with our partners from across Europe who feel that this topic has not been given the platform that it requires. Creating an LGBTI+ inclusive society is a priority on our agenda and we feel that our partners would benefit from a collective training course which is accessible to all. By creating a dedicated training course which can be delivered to a wide audience thus facilitating participants a greater understanding into the issues facing LGBTI+ rural youth in Ireland and of course rural young people across our partner organisations and beyond. The aim of the week long training course was to focus on creating a more inclusive society where LGBTI+ rural young people feel empowered and have the confidence that they can express themselves freely without feeling excluded or marginalised. We wanted to target negative stereotyping and create tools to deal with and focus on changing perceptions of rural young people, and by having a dynamic set of partners we feel that collectively we will achieve the best possible outcome. Macra na Feirme along with partner organisations aimed to create cohesive strategies for breaking down barriers and promote social inclusion to allow rural young people throughout Europe to become part of an increasing diverse society and to promote social acceptance, giving confidence to participants to start conversations whilst imparting the participants with guidelines and resources. The training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to motivate, encourage, inspire and empower their communities to create inclusive societies. We wanted to carry out this project as a tool to assist in creating cohesive strategies for inclusion and ultimately implementing solutions for breaking down social isolation. The training will have helped facilitate rural young people to generate proposals for practical projects and solutions that can be implemented within their own organisations, communities and countries, based on where they currently are at in terms of LGBTI+ learning, inclusion and understanding. Ultimately, in time, LGBTI+ acceptance should not be something that has to be actively fought for but is expected as the standard, rather than been something that is celebrated as being out of the ordinary.
