Early School Leaving / combating failure in education

Objectives

The Icelandic education system has been undergoing massive development since 2011 when a new national curriculum was put in place. The biggest changes are in the evaluation. The ASSESS project is built upon the re-education strategy for the next 3 years with the main focus on training supporting the integration of formative assessment to all classes and teaching. Landakotsskóli wants to learn from the best in how to integrate and implement formative assessment in our school and is, therefore, offering teachers and middle managers (teaching coordinators for different age groups) to learn from advantaged schools through job shadowing. All participants will transfer their skills and experiences to other participants and teachers as well as between host schools through reflection and feedback.

Background

School management is characterized by a democracy where everyone has a say and decisions are made in cooperation with teachers and other employees. All employees are encouraged to seek further education and training and take part in European and International cooperation. Landakotsskóli is constantly looking out for ways to improve students, teachers, and other staff performances and capacities. Today we are focusing on developing formative assessment and its implementation by our teachers and with our students. We want to learn from the best in Europe focusing on different age groups and school subjects. Landakotsskóli needs to learn processes and methodologies used in formative assessment through cross-border cooperation as Icelandic schools have just recently started to implement it in their schools. The ASSESS project will enable Landakotsskóli to further develop. integrate and improve formative assessment over the two year period as well as providing relevant results and develop skills that can then be transferred to other schools in Iceland. The ASSESS project will also enable host schools to reflect upon their practices and learn from each other.
