Objectives

In the Nordic countries, mental health problems have been estimated to cause a reduction in the daily life functioning of 15- 20 percent of young people. It has been stipulated that of these, half are considered in need of treatment due to the severity of symptoms. Strong associations have been found between poor self-rated health, school dropout and reduced work integration in Nordic youth populations. Despite the availability of public health care across the Nordic countries, it appears that only about 30 percent of youngsters that suffer from high levels of anxiety and depression seek professional help. Reasons for this disparity may be numerous, but it has been suggested that traditional treatment approaches and hospital settings may feel inhibiting and disengaging to many youths. This seminar enabled the partner organizations the opportunities to meet up in real life and start working on a plan and a timeline for a strategic partnership that aimed to strengthen the quality of youth work across the Nordic countries with the focus on reaching out to vulnerable youngsters. Participants were twenty five trainers, youth leaders, educators, mental health professionals and researchers, cooperating with 5 different organizations from Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. This was the first project the partnership countries participated in together within the informal network of NOTN - https://nordicoutdoortherapy.org/ but they have been working towards sharing the philosophy and methodological approach of Outdoor Therapy. As the approach of Outdoor Therapy is still new to the field of youth work in the Nordic countries, the seminar offered participants an opportunity to start exploring and agree on the next steps to: Find out the common vision for working out a partnership together Engage in research in the field of Outdoor Therapy Plan and design more trainings and youth exchange to build on our own capacity in the field Organize a Nordic conference During these four day´s the group used different non-formal methods to discuss, reflect, percent and design out ideas in both subgroups and as a big group to reach all the ideas and topics we aimed to reach. At the end of the meeting we had created a common vision and a clear timeline that enables the group to take next steps in our work and prepare a strategic partnership project with more detailed focus of how to achieve our aims to strengthen the field of outdoor therapy work with vulnerable youngsters.
