Objectives

The Safeguarding and Anti-Racism Training Weekend was a 2 day conference held in Iceland by Stelpur rokka! (Girls Rock! Iceland) in collaboration with Girls Rock! London. Staff, board, volunteers and youth participants of both organizations met in Reykjavík, Iceland over the weekend of May 21st and 22nd and co-produced a professional training conference focussing on various themes of safeguarding, anti racism, social justice work, organizational development and music production. The aim of the project was threefold. Firstly, our priority was to offer our staff, volunteers and youth participants in-depth training in the areas of safeguarding and anti-racism. We chose these two focus points as we had identified a need to better ensure the safety and better meet the various needs of our campers that take part in our various programming. Our aim is to center youth with fewer opportunities in our programming and we identified that more in depth professional training to be a priority in that regard. Secondly, we wanted to promote and enhance cooperation between the two sister organization and offer our board, staff, volunteers and youth participants the opportunity to learn about common themes and issues to both camps in a multicultural setting, drawing from each camp's unique cultural experience. Through international collaboration, our aim was to foster a sense of shared values and shared identity among people active within the rock camp movement and to empowers all participants to further their commitment to promoting social justice education through music programs. Thirdly, we wanted to create an international professional environment in which our youth participants could further their facilitation and leadership skills, empowering them to take a more active part in our movement building going into the future.
