Project summary

Higher education institutions (HI) are the bearers of contemporary educational trends and modalities of sustainable management education. Sustainability principles have many applications in the field of project management. A large number of organizations aspire to be project oriented and bring higher value to the whole society. The main goal of the project is development of an international course, under the title "Projectification and Sustainable Governance of Projects", in collaboration between University of Iceland, Vilnius University and University of Belgrade. Intensive course will be involved into study process of Master studies in partner universities during the three year period. The course will be based on a variety of teaching methods and will address the management of project-oriented organizations and the sustainability aspect of project management. Project will include five work packages (WP): WP 1 – Preparation for the Course development (lead by Lithuania); WP2 – Course development (lead by Iceland); WP3 – Course pilot (lead by Serbia); WP4 – Promotion of the Course (lead by Serbia); WP5 – Consortium Coordination (lead by Iceland). There are three different intellectual outputs types, namely: 1. Curriculum for intensive course (based on 3 iterations); 2. Teachers e-handbook; 3. e-Handbook of the course. The collaboration aims to improve the mobility of teachers and students and to promote internationalization among the participating countries. The main results of the project will be presented through periodic reports and documents published on the official web portals of the participating countries (Iceland, Lithuania and Serbia) concerning the following aspects: a. Improvement of higher education and Master academic studies through internationalization of courses for students of participating countries (Iceland, Lithuania and Serbia), tailored to their needs in terms of format (lectures, interactive training and workshops) and content (innovative approach to project management); b. Created curriculum and material (developed collaborative knowledge base) on sustainable project management, which will serve as a basis for subsequent course improvements. Also, case studies will be created for each country in the context of sustainable project management; c. Improvement of the collaboration, mobility and competencies of university professors and associates competent to carry out study activities within this course; d. Enhanced student mobility through a network of students ready and willing to participate in the international exchange and dissemination of innovative knowledge and practices. The internationalization of teaching courses at Master Academic Studies influences that teachers, associates, students and institutions participating in the project enhance the competencies and capacities, which support the project results. Through the exchange of experiences, teaching curricula and methods, as well as expert literature, among the participating countries, contemporary trends in the analysis of project orientation and sustainable project management in the examples of Iceland, Lithuania and Serbia will be presented. Activities that, in addition to disseminating project results, will affect the sustainability of the project include the formation of an Alumni Club within the course (project management program), with the aim of gathering and sharing acquired knowledge and experience at the international level, as well as the continuous dissemination of collaborative aspects among participating countries. Also, initiating cooperation with companies through participation in the practical part of teaching (guest lectures, company visits, case studies) will influence the quality of the teaching process, teaching materials and approaches used for project management.

Objectives

The primary objective of this endeavor was to seamlessly integrate sustainability principles into Master-level project management education within Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Anchored in sustainable development and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the project recognized the paramount importance of aligning business objectives with broader societal and environmental well-being. Through the creation of an intensive course, comprehensive teaching guidelines, and a pilot program embedded within Master studies, the project's core aspiration was to revolutionize project management education. A key outcome was the cultivation of cross-disciplinary collaboration and heightened cross-cultural awareness among students, educators, and external stakeholders. Ultimately, the project's overarching aim was to instill a sustainable mindset, thereby elevating the social and economic impact of project management methodologies. The collaborative effort sought to achieve several interconnected goals, chiefly enhancing the mobility of both teachers and students while fostering internationalization among participating universities. The project's significant outcomes were communicated through regular reports and documents released on the official web portals of the involved universities (Iceland, Lithuania, and Serbia), addressing the following dimensions: a. Elevated the quality of higher education and Master-level academic programs through the internationalization of courses designed for students from the partnering countries (Iceland, Lithuania, and Serbia). These courses were tailored to meet specific requirements in terms of format (lectures, interactive training, and workshops) and content (innovative approaches to project management). b. Created a curriculum and educational materials, which formed the foundation for a collaborative knowledge repository on sustainable project management. This repository not only facilitated ongoing course enhancements but also generated country-specific case studies within the context of sustainable project management. c. Enhanced collaboration, mobility, and the expertise of university professors and associates, equipping them to effectively conduct educational activities within this specialized course. d. Facilitated increased student mobility through a network of students who were enthusiastic about participating in international exchanges and disseminating innovative knowledge and practices.

Background

Higher education institutions (HEIs) serve as carriers of contemporary educational trends and sustainable management education modalities, with principles of sustainability finding diverse applications in project management. Many organizations aspire to adopt a project-oriented approach that contributes significantly to societal value. The key objective of this initiative was to collaboratively establish an international course titled "Projectification and Sustainable Governance of Projects" in partnership with the Universities of Iceland, Vilnius, and Belgrade. Spanning a three-year period, the endeavor integrated intensive modules into the Master's curriculum at these institutions. Employing a variety of pedagogical approaches, the course centered on the management of project-oriented organizations and the crucial sustainability facet of project management. At its core, this project aimed to fulfill multiple pivotal needs within higher education institutions and the realm of project management. It foremost acknowledged the pivotal role of HEIs in advancing sustainable governance and overall societal well-being. Despite recognizing the significance of sustainability principles, a persistent gap persisted between theoretical understanding and practical implementation. To bridge this gap, the project's central strategy involved horizontally integrating sustainability principles into study programs, with a particular emphasis on their infusion into the realm of Project Management. Given that a substantial portion of the global GDP relies on projects, the initiative sought to rectify the deficiency in sustainable project management education. Its overarching goal was to furnish students and educators with the essential competencies for promoting sustainability in project-oriented organizations, ultimately augmenting employment opportunities, fostering improved collaboration, and making substantial contributions to worldwide sustainability objectives.
